Washington D.C, – A group of 72 House Democrats has formally urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reject any unilateral U.S. military action inside Mexico, warning that such a move would severely damage bilateral relations and undermine efforts to combat drug trafficking.
The letter was led by U.S. Representative Greg Stanton, House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, and Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Ranking Member Joaquin Castro. The lawmakers emphasized that any military operation conducted without Mexico’s consent and without congressional authorization would have serious diplomatic and security consequences.
In the letter, the Democrats cautioned that unilateral military action would erode trust between the two countries and disrupt cooperation with Mexican authorities. They argued that such actions would ultimately make it more difficult to prevent drugs from entering U.S. communities and weaken existing cross-border enforcement efforts.
The warning comes just one day after President Donald Trump said during an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News that the United States would begin targeting cartel-controlled territory, stating, “We are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels.”
House Democrats stressed that diplomacy, coordination with Mexico, and adherence to U.S. law remain essential to addressing cartel violence and drug trafficking, warning that military escalation could create long-term instability and harm U.S. national interests.
