Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday congratulated President Donald Trump after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, describing the operation as a decisive act that advanced what he called freedom and justice.
In a statement shared publicly, Netanyahu praised Trump’s leadership and commended the U.S. military personnel involved in the mission. In a post on X, Netanyahu credited Trump with taking bold action and highlighted the role of American forces in carrying out the operation.
“Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump, for your bold and historic leadership on behalf of freedom and justice,” Netanyahu wrote. “I salute your decisive resolve and the brilliant action of your brave soldiers.”
The remarks followed confirmation that U.S. forces captured Maduro and removed him from Venezuela in a military operation conducted early Saturday, an outcome that marked the culmination of months of escalating pressure by the Trump administration on the oil-rich South American nation.
Netanyahu’s statement quickly drew international attention and represented one of the most prominent responses from a close U.S. ally to the dramatic development involving Maduro. The Venezuelan leader has governed the country for more than a decade, during which Venezuela experienced economic collapse, mass migration, and persistent allegations of corruption, drug trafficking, and human rights abuses.
For years, Maduro has been the subject of U.S. sanctions and criminal indictments, with American officials accusing his government of turning Venezuela into a narco-state while suppressing political opposition and manipulating elections. His capture marked a significant turn in the prolonged confrontation between Washington and Caracas.
Netanyahu framed the event as more than a tactical success, portraying it as a broader moral victory against authoritarian rule. His language echoed themes frequently emphasized during Trump’s presidency, including deterrence, strength, and the use of force to confront hostile regimes.
While in office, Trump pursued a hardline approach toward Maduro, imposing sweeping sanctions, formally recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s legitimate president, and repeatedly stating that military options remained under consideration. Supporters of that strategy argue it isolated Maduro internationally and weakened his hold on power.
Critics, however, have raised concerns about the long-term consequences of U.S. involvement and warned of potential instability inside Venezuela following Maduro’s removal. As global leaders assess the situation, questions remain about the country’s political future and the path forward after the sudden change in leadership.
Netanyahu’s public praise also highlighted the enduring relationship between the two leaders. During Trump’s first term, the U.S. and Israel deepened ties through actions such as the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the signing of the Abraham Accords, milestones that defined their close diplomatic partnership.
