New data show monthly abortion totals continued climbing in the first half of 2025, driven largely by telehealth distribution of abortion pills, even as many states enforce strict bans.

The number of abortions performed nationwide increased again in the first half of 2025 compared with the previous year, despite the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision returning abortion regulation to individual states, according to figures cited by Just the News.
The Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in June 2022, overturning Roe v. Wade and ending federal constitutional protections for abortion. Since then, numerous states have enacted or enforced strict limits or outright bans. However, recent data indicate overall abortion totals have continued to rise.
The pro-abortion Society of Family Planning reported last month that an estimated 98,630 abortions were performed each month through June 2025, up from approximately 95,250 per month in 2024. That compares with an estimated monthly average of 88,180 abortions in 2023 and 79,620 in 2022.
According to the group’s estimates, more than one-quarter of abortions in the first half of 2025 — about 27 percent — were carried out through telehealth, meaning abortion pills were prescribed remotely and shipped by mail, according to the Daily Wire.
Those medication abortions were most common in states with some of the strongest pro-life laws, including Texas and Louisiana, where in-state provision of abortion pills is banned. In many cases, the drugs were reportedly prescribed by providers located in other states and mailed into jurisdictions with abortion restrictions.
In Louisiana, the estimated number of medicated abortions rose to 7,530 in 2024, up from 2,480 in 2023. Texas saw an even sharper increase, with an estimated 35,870 medication abortions in 2024 compared with 12,420 the year before, according to the same reporting.
Data for the second half of 2025 have not yet been released.
The figures have intensified frustration among anti-abortion activists closely aligned with President Donald Trump, particularly over the continued federal rule allowing broad access to abortion drugs by mail.
“It’s hard to understand how on Earth the FDA has left this rule in place,” the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group wrote in a social media post last month. “Mail-order abortion drugs don’t just undermine state laws, they cost babies’ lives & send women to the ER.”
“Abortions are continuing, even rising, because of this rule,” the group added.
