North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared publicly with his teenage daughter at one of the country’s most politically significant sites on New Year’s Day, a carefully choreographed moment that analysts say strengthens speculation she is being positioned as a future successor.
State media images released on Friday showed Kim, his wife Ri Sol Ju and their daughter, widely believed to be named Kim Ju Ae, visiting the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang. The mausoleum houses the embalmed bodies of Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, Kim Il Sung, the founding leader of North Korea. The girl was seen standing prominently alongside her parents and bowing deeply before the statues and preserved remains of the country’s former leaders.
The visit marked the first known occasion on which Kim’s daughter has been taken to the mausoleum, a location imbued with deep symbolic meaning for the ruling family and the state. North Korean leaders traditionally visit the site on major anniversaries to underscore the legitimacy of their rule and their connection to the country’s revolutionary lineage.
Political analysts say the timing and visibility of the appearance suggest it was intended to send a message ahead of a major meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party. The party is expected to hold its first congress in five years in the coming weeks, a gathering that typically sets national policy direction and reshuffles senior leadership positions.
“The Kumsusan Palace of the Sun symbolizes the legitimacy of the North Korean regime,” said Cheong Seong-chang, a senior analyst at a private research institute in South Korea. He described the appearance of Kim’s daughter at the site as a calculated political move, particularly as the country prepares for a rare and closely watched party congress.
Kim Jong Un, 41, is the third generation of his family to rule North Korea since its establishment in 1948. His own succession followed the death of his father in 2011, and both Kim Jong Un and his father were largely kept out of the public eye until adulthood. The repeated and increasingly prominent appearances of Kim Ju Ae have therefore drawn close attention from foreign governments and specialists on North Korean politics.
Since first being revealed to the public in late 2022, Kim’s daughter has accompanied him to a growing number of high-profile events. These have included military parades, weapons tests and overseas trips, including a visit to China last year. During recent New Year celebrations, state media showed her displaying visible affection toward her father, an image that reinforced her public role within the ruling family.
Some experts believe Kim Jong Un may soon grant his daughter an official title, possibly at the upcoming party congress, though opinions differ on how far such a move could go given her young age, estimated to be around 13. While some analysts speculate she could be named to a senior position to formally establish her status, others argue she is more likely to receive a symbolic or lower-level role rather than one of the party’s top posts.
South Korea’s intelligence agency has previously told lawmakers it considers Kim Ju Ae the most likely heir based on her public exposure and treatment by state media. However, that view is not universally shared. Skeptics note that Kim Jong Un is still relatively young and that North Korea’s political system has long been dominated by men, raising questions about whether the country is ready to accept a female leader.
The Workers’ Party congress, expected to take place in January or February, is likely to provide further clues about the regime’s long-term plans. Until then, Kim Jong Un’s decision to bring his daughter to one of the most sacred sites in North Korean politics is being widely interpreted as another deliberate step in shaping public perception of the future of the Kim dynasty.
