Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky touched down at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday for high-stakes talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The focus? A potential cease-fire and resolution to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

Zelensky, accompanied by his team, aims to negotiate a comprehensive 20-point peace plan. This proposal could involve territorial concessions and joint management of a nuclear power plant, seeking to conclude the conflict that erupted over three years ago with Russia’s invasion.

Before the summit, Trump held a lengthy phone conversation—lasting more than an hour—with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reports indicate both leaders favor a durable peace agreement over a temporary truce. Putin urged Zelensky to demonstrate “courageous and responsible political leadership,” according to The New York Times.

As negotiations unfold, Russia has intensified assaults on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions. Analysts view these escalations as pressure tactics to push Ukraine toward concessions.

Upon Zelensky’s arrival, Trump expressed optimism to reporters, stating, “We have the makings of a deal.” He emphasized that both Putin and Zelensky appear committed to forging a lasting peace, as covered by CNN.

The discussions center on Zelensky’s revised 20-point framework, adapted from a 28-point U.S. proposal earlier this year. Key players include Zelensky, Trump, and officials from their respective administrations.

Additional elements include a tripartite security pact involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe. Plans also feature a direct U.S.-Ukraine bilateral agreement, plus economic initiatives to aid Ukraine’s reconstruction after three years of devastating warfare, per the Kyiv Independent.

The BBC reports that Putin and Trump may connect via phone later Sunday, following the Mar-a-Lago session.

Trump, vacationing in Palm Beach since December 20, paused his holiday for this crucial meeting. It follows Zelensky’s recent hour-long call with Trump’s foreign envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who are spearheading the peace finalization.

Earlier this month, Trump indicated reluctance for meetings without nearing a breakthrough, signaling advanced progress. U.S. officials note that about 90% of the deal’s terms are resolved, a figure Zelensky confirmed on Friday.

Zelensky acknowledged the challenges, saying, “It isn’t easy. No one is saying that it will be 100% right away, but nevertheless, we must bring the desired result closer with every such meeting, every such conversation.”
