Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to return to the lineup Saturday night after missing more than two weeks with a right calf strain, giving the Milwaukee Bucks a significant boost as they continue to navigate an uneven stretch of the season.
The Bucks confirmed Antetokounmpo’s availability roughly an hour before tipoff against the Chicago Bulls, upgrading him after initially listing the two-time MVP as questionable. His return comes after an eight-game absence that tested Milwaukee’s depth and exposed how heavily the team relies on its franchise cornerstone.
Antetokounmpo has not played since Dec. 3, when he exited less than three minutes into a 113–109 win over the Detroit Pistons after injuring his calf. That setback occurred just days after he had returned from a left adductor strain that had already sidelined him for four games, raising concerns about workload and recovery timing.
Reflecting on the injury earlier this month, Antetokounmpo suggested that pushing himself back into action may have contributed to the calf issue. He noted that overcompensating for a previous injury, combined with heavy minutes and a condensed schedule, can place excessive stress on the lower leg. The soleus muscle, part of the calf complex, is particularly vulnerable under those conditions, he explained.
Milwaukee has struggled to find consistency without its leader on the floor. The Bucks went 2–6 during the eight games Antetokounmpo missed with the calf strain, often lacking their usual offensive rhythm and defensive presence. The contrast has been stark throughout the season: Milwaukee is 9–8 in games Antetokounmpo has played and just 3–11 when he has been unavailable.
Now 31 after celebrating his birthday on Dec. 6, Antetokounmpo has continued to perform at an elite level when healthy. He is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists this season, anchoring both ends of the court and serving as the focal point of the Bucks’ offense.
His return offers Milwaukee renewed optimism as it looks to regain momentum and stabilize its rotation. While the team is expected to monitor his minutes closely, having Antetokounmpo back in uniform restores a level of confidence and competitiveness the Bucks have struggled to maintain during his absence.
