POUGHKEEPSIE – Santa Claus and his merry elves, wearing City of Poughkeepsie police uniforms, spread holiday cheer throughout the city on Saturday and then welcomed visitors to the Winter Wonderland at the Main Street Public Safety Building on Saturday night.
Santa Claus and his uniformed elves started the day at 9 AM packing up toys for boys and girls throughout the city, and then went off to bring Santa and presents to kids throughout the city. After several publicized stops, from Hudson Garden Apartments to Boulevard Knolls, Santa and his police sleigh ended at the 7-11 on Hooker Avenue to greet kids who stopped by. Festive police elves and their boss, Santa Claus, greeted those who stopped and gave them an early present after posing for pictures with the festive group.
Saturday night, Santa Claus returned to the Main Street Public Safety Building, where city cops and firefighters decorated the driveway, emergency vehicles, and parking lot with festive lights and inflatable decorations, steering people to the world’s busiest elf, who was holding court of a different kind at the end of the path.
Santa welcomed the young visitors, and elves provided an age-appropriate toy for the mesmerized youngsters.
City of Poughkeepsie PBA President Kevin Van Wagner, a longtime veteran of the morning Candy Cane Run and nighttime Winter Wonderland, said both events are important to maintain positive community relations. “The City of Poughkeepsie PBA understands the importance of being an active stakeholder in the community it proudly serves and protects. We remain committed to spreading holiday cheer and strengthening our bond with the residents we proudly serve.”
Following Saturday night’s event, city cops helped Santa return to the North Pole so he could make final preparations for his upcoming journey.
