Iran carried out missile-related military drills in multiple cities on Monday, according to state media reports citing unnamed sources and witnesses, marking the second such exercise reported within the past month amid heightened regional tensions.
Iranian state outlets said the drills involved missile activity in the capital Tehran as well as the cities of Isfahan and Mashhad. Videos published by the Telegram channel of Iran’s public broadcaster and the semi-official Nournews outlet appeared to show missile launches, though the footage did not specify exact locations. The authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified.
Later Monday, Iranian state media cited what it described as “informed sources” who denied that any missiles were tested, claiming instead that the images circulating online showed “high-altitude aircraft.” No official clarification was provided to reconcile the conflicting accounts.
The reported drills come as Western powers continue to view Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal as a destabilizing conventional threat in the Middle East and as a potential delivery system for nuclear weapons should Tehran pursue them. Iran has repeatedly denied any intention to develop atomic bombs.
The developments follow reporting that U.S. officials are closely monitoring Iran’s missile and nuclear-related activities. According to NBC News, President Donald Trump was expected to be briefed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that any expansion of Iran’s ballistic missile program could pose a threat requiring rapid action. NBC also reported that Israeli officials believe Iran may be working to reconstitute nuclear enrichment sites that were struck by U.S. forces in June and are preparing to present Trump with options for renewed action against Iran’s missile capabilities.
Earlier this month, Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy conducted a two-day military exercise aimed at countering foreign threats, during which it fired ballistic and cruise missiles at simulated targets in the Gulf, according to Iranian media.
The latest reports of missile activity underscore ongoing uncertainty over Iran’s military intentions as regional and international scrutiny of its defense programs continues.
