We often forget that pastors are people, too. They have families, bad days, bills to pay, and insecurities just like the rest of us. Yet, because of their title, people often feel entitled to say things to them that they would never say to a coworker or a friend.

Whether it is a backhanded compliment about a sermon or a prying question about their personal life, these comments can sting more than you realize. If you want to support your spiritual leader rather than drain them, here are the things you should absolutely avoid saying to a pastor.

‘Must Be Nice to Only Work One Day a Week’

This is the classic offender. It is usually said as a joke, but it minimizes the immense emotional and mental labor pastors do. Between counseling sessions, hospital visits, administrative work, and sermon prep, most pastors work well over 40 hours. Honestly, it is insulting to imply their job is a breeze.

Instead, try asking what their week looks like. You will likely be surprised by the sheer volume of invisible work that goes into keeping a church community running smoothly.

‘I Didn’t Get Anything Out of That Sermon’

Feedback is fine, but treating a worship service like a consumer product is hurtful. Pastors pour their hearts into their messages. Telling them it ‘didn’t land’ without any constructive context just feels like a rejection of their vulnerability.

If you struggled with a message, frame it as a question. Ask them to clarify a point. Engage with the content rather than just reviewing it like a movie on Yelp. It opens a conversation rather than shutting down their confidence.

‘People Are Saying…’

This phrase is toxic in any environment, but especially in a church. Using anonymous ‘people’ to deliver criticism is cowardly and anxiety-inducing. It makes the pastor feel like there is a secret conspiracy against them.

If you have an issue, own it. Speak for yourself. Don’t hide behind a vague group of dissenters. Direct, kind communication is always better than shadowy rumors.

Respecting the Human

At the end of the day, kindness costs nothing. Pastors carry the heavy spiritual burdens of their congregation. The last thing they need is careless comments adding to that weight. A little empathy goes a long way in sustaining their ability to lead and care for you.

Next Sunday, try offering a word of specific encouragement instead. It might be exactly what they need to hear to keep going.
