Tech billionaire Elon Musk dismissed the newly announced “Trump Accounts”—a savings and investment initiative for young Americans—as a “nice gesture” but ultimately unnecessary, arguing that AI and robotics will soon eliminate the need to save money by creating a future of “universal high income.”

In a recent post on X, Musk responded to investor Ray Dalio’s announcement about contributing to the “Trump Accounts”, a program established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. While acknowledging the philanthropic intent, Musk asserted that traditional savings will become obsolete as AI and automation reshape the economy.

“This is a nice gesture, but in the future, AI and robotics will make saving money unnecessary,” Musk wrote, doubling down on his long-standing prediction that AI-driven abundance will render financial planning irrelevant.

A Future Without Work or Scarcity

Musk has repeatedly outlined his vision of a post-labor economy, where AI and robots handle nearly all productive tasks. At the 2024 Viva Technology conference in Paris, he suggested that in a “benign scenario,” most people won’t need to work, as machines will outperform humans in nearly every domain. Instead, he envisions a world of “universal high income”—not just universal basic income—where goods and services are abundant, and work becomes optional.

“There’s an 80% probability that AI will make jobs optional,” Musk stated, framing the shift as a question of finding purpose rather than financial survival. “The real challenge will be: What do people do with their time when they don’t have to work?”

AI as the Solution to Economic Crises

Musk has also claimed that AI and robotics are the only viable solutions to America’s $34 trillion debt crisis, arguing that human labor will become economically irrelevant as automation takes over. His companies, including Tesla, are already pivoting toward this future, with plans for Optimus robots to eventually generate 80% of Tesla’s value—despite ongoing production delays and executive departures.

“Work will be optional, like playing sports or gardening,” Musk told Breitbart News in November. “Some people will still choose to work because they enjoy it, but most won’t have to.”

A Radical Shift in Economic Thinking

Musk’s comments reflect a fundamental rejection of traditional financial systems, suggesting that money itself may become obsolete as AI-driven production meets all human needs. His vision aligns with a post-capitalist future, where scarcity is eliminated by machine efficiency, and human labor is a choice, not a necessity.

As AI continues to advance, Musk’s predictions—once dismissed as futuristic speculation—are increasingly shaping debates about the future of work, wealth, and economic policy. Whether his vision proves accurate remains to be seen, but his influence ensures that the idea of a money-free, AI-driven society will remain a defining topic of the decade.
