The son of acclaimed Hollywood actor, director and filmmaker Rob Reiner has been jailed as a suspect in the killing of his parents after the couple were found dead in their Los Angeles home over the weekend, police said on Monday.
Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody late Sunday night and booked on suspicion of murder after investigators determined that Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were victims of homicide. He remained in county jail without bail as of Monday, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department. Homicide detectives said they would present their findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday for a decision on whether to file formal charges.
Rob Reiner, 78, one of Hollywood’s most respected directors and a beloved figure in film and television, and Michele Reiner, 70, were discovered dead Sunday afternoon inside their residence in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood. Police said their investigation led them to conclude that the couple had been killed and that their son was responsible for their deaths. Local media outlets reported that the Reiners’ daughter was the first to discover the bodies.
Nick Reiner has spoken publicly for years about his struggles with substance abuse, describing a long battle with addiction that began in his teens. In a 2016 interview, he said he first entered rehabilitation at the age of 15 and would eventually undergo treatment at least 17 times. He also recounted periods of homelessness when he resisted seeking help. Those deeply personal experiences later inspired the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” which Nick co-wrote with his father. Rob Reiner once described the project as one of the most personal endeavors of his career.
Local media reports said Nick Reiner had been seen arguing with his parents on Saturday night at a holiday gathering hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, just hours before the killings were believed to have taken place. Only months earlier, the Reiner family had appeared together publicly at the Los Angeles premiere of Rob Reiner’s most recent film, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” Photographs from the event showed Nick Reiner standing alongside his parents and siblings, noticeably unsmiling.
News of Rob Reiner’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry and political circles. Beyond his film career, Reiner was known as an outspoken advocate for progressive causes and social justice. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said he had “improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”
As an actor, Rob Reiner first became a household name in the 1970s for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking television sitcom “All in the Family.” His portrayal of the liberal son-in-law to the show’s bigoted patriarch earned him two Emmy Awards and made him a defining face of the era’s socially conscious television.
Reiner went on to enjoy an extraordinarily successful career as a director, beginning with the 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” which became a cult classic celebrated for its improvised style and sharp satire. Reiner also appeared in the film as fictional documentarian Marty DiBergi. He later explained that the key was to both parody and honor the world of rock music at the same time.
Over the following decades, Reiner directed nearly two dozen films, many of which became enduring classics. His work included the 1986 coming-of-age drama “Stand by Me,” the romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” widely regarded as one of the greatest films of its genre, and the fairy-tale adventure “The Princess Bride.” He also helmed the psychological thriller “Misery” and the courtroom drama “A Few Good Men.” One of the most iconic moments in “When Harry Met Sally” featured Reiner’s own mother, Estelle Reiner, delivering the famous line, “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Michele Reiner, who largely stayed out of the spotlight, was at one time a professional photographer and took the image of Donald Trump that later appeared on the cover of his book “Trump: The Art of the Deal.” Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian and writer Carl Reiner, was also deeply involved in Democratic politics, producing campaign advertisements for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential run and campaigning against California’s 2008 ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage.
In the wake of the couple’s deaths, former President Donald Trump made a controversial social media post, without evidence, suggesting their killing was linked to political animosity toward him. The remark drew widespread criticism amid the unfolding investigation.
Rob Reiner was previously married to actress and filmmaker Penny Marshall and was an adoptive father to her daughter. He later had three children with Michele Reiner. As authorities continue their investigation, the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner mark a tragic and shocking end to the life of a man whose work left an indelible mark on American film, television and culture.
