POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino submitted her choice for Commissioner of the Department of Community and Family Services (DCFS), Sabrina Jaar Marzouka, last month for consideration in December. Marzouka, with an M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins, has worked for Dutchess County since 1997, when she started in the Health Department, rising through the ranks before being named Commissioner of DCFS in 2015.
The leader of DCFS was reappointed to another five-year term in 2020, and Serino wanted her to serve another five-year term, through December 31, 2030.
During legislative committee meetings this month, Commissioner Marzouka received praise for her abilities and performance from both sides of the aisle. Assistant Minority Leader Barrington Atkins supported the reappointment and asked to be added as a cosponsor of the resolution.
“This office – Commissioner Marzouka does a lot of hard work and may have one of the toughest jobs in Dutchess County, and she takes a lot of heat from every direction,” Atkins said, before telling the committee of his additional reasoning. “She’s a woman – running a department, so please add me as a co-sponsor.”
The Marzouka appointment passed through committee and Commissioner Marzouka was confirmed for another five-year term at the December 8, 2025, meeting of the legislature.
