PORT JERVIS – Just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Port Jervis Police, Fire, and EMS units responded to a reported partial building collapse/rescue call at 21 West Main in Port Jervis.
Upon arrival, responders found that a side section of a closed gas station/auto repair shop had collapsed, pulled away from the main portion of the structure, and landed in part in a construction hole located alongside the building.
Port Jervis Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Jeffrey Lewis was on scene at the call and said work had been going on at the site. The portion of the building that collapsed was located at the corner of the structure, closest to the driveway. That side bay portion had separated from the main part of the structure and slowly caved in.
No injuries were reported. However, fire and police departments did assist a tenant in evacuating from an apartment over the main part of the building.
In addition, Orange and Rockland Utilities provided a power cut to the building and firefighters placed caution tape around the affected property.
Work took place at the site throughout Wednesday as construction workers loaded and removed multiple truckloads from the property.
It was reported by neighbors on scene that old oil tanks had been in the process of being removed as part of ongoing work at the site. However, Port Jervis Building Official David Rivera was unable to be reached for additional work site information Wednesday.
