PORT JERVIS – A man arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a freshman at Port Jervis High School seriously injured two weeks ago was arraigned in City of Port Jervis Court on Monday.
Ronald Sloat, 65, of Campbell Hall, has been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury incident without reporting.
It is alleged that Sloat was driving his 2000 Jeep when he hit a 14-year-old boy on Nov. 25.
Video obtained by Mid-Hudson News shows the Jeep striking the boy while he was in a crosswalk. The Jeep proceeded to drag the teen under the vehicle and run over his body with the rear tire.
Port Jervis Police Department was ultimately able to identify the driver of the Jeep as Sloat.
He told law enforcement that he was unable to see the pedestrian due to blindness in his right eye.
The victim was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center and later to Westchester Medical Center, where he underwent two separate surgeries.
Law enforcement sources said that the family of the 14-year-old has retained Goshen personal injury attorney Amir Sadaghiani, who could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday night.
Sloat is next scheduled to appear before Judge Kiel Van Horn at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 22nd.
