FBI Director Kash Patel over the weekend provided new details on the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, confirming that the suspect in custody is believed to be responsible for Kirk’s death.
Kirk was shot and killed during a university event in Utah on Sept. 10, and the suspect, identified as Robinson, was arrested the following day.
During an interview with Megyn Kelly, Patel confirmed that the bureau believes Robinson was the gunman. “Yes,” Patel said when asked directly whether Robinson was responsible.
Patel emphasized that the case remains under Utah state jurisdiction as a murder investigation, with the FBI playing a supporting role. “We’re working with the prosecutors in Utah to make sure we don’t screw up their investigation,” he said. “The worst outcome would be if the guy that killed Charlie Kirk walks out of a United States courtroom in the state of Utah.”
The FBI director compared the probe to the January 6 pipe bomb investigation, noting that the bureau continues to provide technical and forensic assistance to state investigators.
Patel also addressed earlier disclosures about Discord chat activity tied to Robinson, stating that while investigators are still analyzing those communications, there is no evidence linking the suspect to any foreign government. “The FBI doesn’t have credible information to connect any foreign governments to it,” Patel said. “We are continuing to take investigative leads.”
According to prosecutors, Robinson was in a relationship with a person who identified as transgender and was also his roommate. Patel confirmed that communications related to that relationship are part of the evidence shared with prosecutors. “That is most definitely under investigation,” he said. “They’ve made some of it public to include that he was in a relationship with an individual who was part of that community.”
Robinson has not yet entered a plea. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 16, followed by arraignment on Jan. 30.
Patel said investigators remain focused on ensuring justice for Kirk’s killing, adding that the FBI and Utah authorities “continue to track every lead to its conclusion.”
