Pam Bondi announces creation of DOJ’s new division dedicated to defending Americans’ right to bear arms.

Attorney General Pam Bondi reaffirmed the Trump administration’s commitment to defending gun rights Friday, declaring that “the Second Amendment is not a second-class right” as the Department of Justice launches a new Second Amendment Rights Division.
Bondi made the announcement in an X post highlighting the administration’s first-ever Supreme Court brief supporting public carry. “The 2nd Amendment is not a second-class right,” she wrote. “After the prior administration’s campaign to infringe on Americans’ gun rights, the Justice Department is strongly committed to undoing the damage — including just last week filing our first ever Supreme Court brief arguing for public carry.”
She added that the new division, operating within the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, will “advance President Trump’s pro-2nd Amendment agenda and protect the right to bear arms for all.”
New DOJ unit underscores Trump’s pro-gun platform
The newly announced Second Amendment Rights Division represents the Trump administration’s most significant institutional step yet toward embedding gun rights protection into the federal legal system. Officials described the division’s mission as ensuring that constitutional protections for firearm ownership and self-defense are upheld at every level of government — from local ordinances to federal regulations.
The move follows President Donald Trump’s long-standing pledge to reverse what his administration has called years of “systematic erosion” of the right to bear arms under former President Joe Biden.
During his May 18, 2024, address to the National Rifle Association in Dallas, Trump underscored his commitment to restoring full constitutional protections for gun owners. “We need the Second Amendment for safety,” he told attendees. “Forget about going hunting and all the things you do — we need it for safety. Because you know the bad guys are not giving up their guns. The bad ones are not giving up their guns.”
A “great restoration” of constitutional freedom
Bondi’s declaration builds on Trump’s broader campaign promise of what he called “a great restoration of American freedom.” The administration has argued that firearm ownership is a fundamental civil right on par with free speech and due process — not a privilege subject to executive reinterpretation.
By institutionalizing the defense of gun rights within the DOJ, Bondi and Trump aim to ensure that future administrations will face legal obstacles to imposing restrictions on lawful gun ownership.
The Justice Department said the new division will begin operations immediately, coordinating with federal prosecutors and state attorneys general to monitor litigation affecting gun owners and challenge laws deemed inconsistent with the Second Amendment.
Bondi’s message was clear: under the Trump administration, the right to bear arms will be defended as a core American freedom, not a conditional one.
