NEW CITY – The Rockland County Health Department says there is the possibility of measles exposure to persons on November 29 if they were at Food Fair Wholesale Fresh Market in Spring Valley between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
They said if you were there at that time and are pregnant, a child under six months old, immunocompromised or immunosuppressed, or have not been vaccinated against the measles, you should call your healthcare provider right away.
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses; 90 percent of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus become infected. You can catch measles just by being in a room where a person with the virus has been, for up to two hours after the person has left.
Symptoms usually appear 10 to 12 days after exposure, but may appear as early as s even days, and as late as 21 days after exposure.
Severe illness and complications, hospitalization and death can occur in unvaccinated people, the health department warns.
