Malaysian airline MH 370 that disappeared mysteriously 11 years back remains unresolved till date. But now after 11 years, the Malaysian Government has decided to restore the operation to start a fresh search for the lost plane.
The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370), Boeing 777 is set to resume on December 30, 2025, after an 11-year pause.
The Malaysian government has contracted Ocean Infinity, a Texas-based marine robotics company, to lead the search operation under a “no find, no fee” agreement. If successful, Ocean Infinity will receive a payment of $70 million. The search will focus on a targeted area in the southern Indian Ocean, utilizing advanced underwater technology and methodologies developed since the initial search efforts.
The search operation, scheduled to last 55 days, will be conducted intermittently and aims to shed light on the mystery surrounding MH370’s disappearance on March 8, 2014. The flight, a Boeing 777, vanished while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. Despite extensive searches covering approximately 5,790 miles in the Southern Indian Ocean, no conclusive evidence has been found.
Several theories have been proposed to explain the disappearance of MH370, including:
Pilot Hijacking/Deliberate Action Theory: The pilot may have deliberately taken control of the aircraft.
Cabin Depressurization: A rapid loss of cabin pressure could have incapacitated the crew and passengers.
Fire or Electrical Issues: A fire or electrical malfunction could have caused the aircraft to crash.
Hijacking by External Parties: External parties may have taken control of the aircraft.
Pilot Error or Misoperation: Crew error or misoperation could have led to the disappearance.
Technical Failure: A catastrophic technical failure could have caused the aircraft to crash.
Ocean Infinity’s advanced underwater vehicles and sonar mapping technology will be deployed to scour the seabed for wreckage. The company has expressed confidence in its technology, citing improvements since the 2018 mission. The search area will be based on analysis of existing data, including satellite pings and drift models.
The decision to resume the search comes after prior attempts were suspended due to poor weather conditions. Families of the victims have expressed cautious optimism about the renewed efforts. The search operation is seen as a significant step in providing closure to the families affected by the tragedy.
