There is this notion that photographers take their best pictures when they are young at the beginning of their careers. But is that so? What do you think?

all right so let's talk about this do
photographers take their best pictures
at the beginning of their career and I
recently uh found this when I was
editing I don't want to brag but my
podcast with Martin Parr uh and I found
this uh he he said it in a sense why do
you think uh photographers take their
best pictures at the beginning of their
careers because they have this raw
energy and we kind of continued
talking uh about other stuff and I
didn't really hit a chance to react to
that question but also at that time I
wasn't quite sure what I would say about
that because there's this notion that
people
like Master photographers right like
Katya brazon uh the the the man jumping
over the puddle uh
is his best photo right and he took it
like at the very beginning of his career
and then Martin pars I think it's Last
Resort or one of those uh his first book
is considered to be and he even said it
in an interview
and that it's uh it's his work that he
will probably you know never produce
anything better than this and then you
have other photographers
like uh I don't know maybe Robert Kappa
we can't really tell because he died
pretty young
uh but you know definitely other
photographers who kind of point to uh
their uh work uh at the beginning stage
of uh their career and say like hey I
this is
this is what uh
I did and it was my best work and I have
to disagree with uh Martin Parr on this
one because he said something like it is
because they have the raw energy when
they're starting and I think the problem
is something and bear with me unless
until I I get this explained is that
their best work is considered
some of their great work right and
basically long story short is I think it
is considered this notion exists here is
because they did not reinvent themselves
enough
right with uh
Martin Parr we have his his first book
and then the second book and third book
and then he published I don't know 200
books
many books part
when he first popped up with his style
it was something new it was something
fresh and people were like wow this is
really you know new and this is unique
original
and those are the people like let's say
also so lighter who kind of end up
defining their own style in the sense
that then you took a photo of a rainy
window and people are like wow this is
really uh very so lighter-ish kind of
photo and uh
now think about it
if they did not
start if they did not take the first
buddy of work we kind of cut it no one
knows about it and they continued you
know doing second book in the similar
style that would be probably considered
their best work but because they kind of
I feel like
very often
because they showed something and got
really high praise about that
they kind of stuck to that style and
kept producing very same photos maybe
Martin Parr is not the best example
because he has a little bit different
styles he has uh you know his regular
documentary style uh he has the flash he
has the telephoto he has uh the macro
shots
and that's where why I think he's such a
successful photographer because he was
able to kind of reinvent himself uh and
uh you know do a little different photos
now looking at Cartier brassonne he
did his kind of like personal uh like
like more artistic projects uh and then
he did his reportage right and
all of those photos they are really
great right but uh they kind of uh and
then some people would put me on the
cross for that but they kind of uh
I wouldn't say look same but they use
the same principles they go for the
decisive moment they go for geometry
they go for composition uh they go for
similar elements you rarely see Cartier
brison taking uh Landscapes or doing
macros or at least that's not what he is
known about so I think the reason uh why
there is this notion which I don't
believe really is true uh do
photographers take their best pictures
at the beginning of the career is just
because they kind of stuck to their uh
to their style and kept doing kept
producing photography
uh which is which was kind of similar to
what they did and uh not to just put
something down or uh you know say it's
bad those are still wonderful photos uh
I'm just saying if you take take the
first half of Katy person's career you
kind of split it discard those photos
then the new ones are going to be
considered the masterpieces and the best
of his uh of his career that's kind of
uh what I think uh
well for me I still consider some of the
best shots I took when I started doing
street photography I was kind of taking
shots of everything without thinking
about the rules or composition it was
Freedom uh I would but but I mean like
you probably do agree that when you look
at your older photos or at least what I
what I experience is that
I look at my older photos and I think
like oh my God this is such a trash at
the point that I thought wow those are
wonderful photos but
now as we getting better or what what I
believe is what you experience as you
get better
you kind of see those photos and uh you
think oh my god I've got so much better
in the meantime than I don't know five
years ago when I like I think it's it's
kind of naive in the sense that
yes you could took a masterpiece but it
was rather
by mistake than uh knowingly doing that
and like a lot of about photography is
uh is about luck right I do agree about
that but still knowing what you what you
uh are doing is Gonna Get You More lucky
right kind of like uh you you trying to
to catch the bus but uh standing at the
bus stop will give you uh more chances
to catch one right than randomly walking
around a city uh
but of course through the years I shaped
my style and until now I'm discovering
and learning more and more street
photography is Big worth and it's
blessing that we are learning more about
street photography yeah okay
all right so that's that
