This is year 5 with Coach Grant and First Down Training! Gavin continues to work, learn, and grow as a wide receiver. And a big part of that is getting better at releases from the line of scrimmage and route running (to get open). One of Gavin's favorite parts of the camp is the 1v1's and Unfortunately no DB's (Defensive Backs) showed up to go against so they had to take turns playing DB. Which Gavin enjoys doing at times but wanted to go against really good DB's to help improve his routes and releases. But still a good and productive weekend and always something to learn from Coach Grant!

Yeah, one leg out that brand new benz way
Hometown asking am I rich?
Repetition from my chest. That's a bench press
Seeing more behind the frame future driver feel the shake thinking ain't nobody feel the way I do
But someone gotta feel the same. Yeah
On the bright side. Yeah, this music here became my only lifeline
Think i'm going crazy. I'm not in my right mind. Yeah
Welcome to my life. Welcome to my life. Yeah
Welcome to my life. Welcome to my
Time for that first down training again. We've done it every year for what we five years
I think I think five years although we missed a year. So I think this is your fourth
Time actual one. So yeah, we've been doing first down training with coach grant for five years
We still really like what he has to say how he coaches just excellent route running techniques and and releases
So today i'm gonna get better at those route running going into sophomore year. We got spring football starts on monday
So it's actually perfect timing. So we got this weekend to work on these routes and then monday spring football morning guys
How we doing? What's up?
Great to see you, man. Yeah, of course, man. Why do you always bring the coal when you come? I don't know
I swear man. It's always time every time. Yeah, what's up cj. Micah. Nice to meet you, man
Cool, man, that's murphy. So I gotta sit
All right, let's get it going
Hey guys, appreciate everybody coming out
Wait
Left right left
Right left right good right arms moving right left right
Dick
Yeah, yeah, that's it
There we go
Nice and easy
Angle
Go
Sell what
Vertical right state, right? So what goes into that is obviously I need to have good speed going into the break
It's not so much about like you need to run as hard as you can. It's more so about like a control
Like where it's like 90 to 95 percent, but it's fast enough to sell a fade
But also like slow enough to have enough control
So our speed ties into it our body language obviously sells verticals
So whenever i'm running a route what I don't want to do is right before i'm about to cut
I raise up with my chest and my chin because that also serves to slow me down
And a lot of receivers will slow their speed or raise up to make this cut
We obviously want to keep like my chin down chest slightly ahead of your waist
So my pad level looks like i'm trying to run past the dv
It's either getting the back pedal or turn its hips and open up
And then the last one is the one a lot of people struggle with and that's our strides right which is what this first
One is going to work on
So a lot of guys like let's say I got a cut at the gray right here
A lot of guys to prepare for the cut to make the cut easier
They come off the ball with great strides and then right before they're about to cut they start to shorten their strides
And then they cut and again the shortening of the strides slows you down and it makes the cut easier
My goal is to get all you guys to be able to keep the same strides from the start of the route
To the end of the route and I let the cut change the direction
Change my direction rather than have an indicator of slowing my speed raising my pad level or shortening my strides
To slow me down and make the cut be the thing that slows me down this first drill
This is going to be working on like a stick cut. So this is for an out route
Now you could run an out route because everybody knows a speed cut
Like where you kind of round it. This is not a speed cut
So this is more like we have man
So if he's like inside shade for example, and I gotta run an out route
I come off the ball
You open up with me this way and I gotta make a cut on an out route on a speed out
You kind of round it right you break off of like let's say your third inside step and you round it up
Why is that bad versus man?
You could undercut you know what i'm saying always gonna be real tight to my hips, right?
So the man covers the break changes a little bit to where he's on my hip I stick
And I gotta push and get straight out. It's okay if we round it maybe a little bit
But for the most part it's got to be flat right foot up
Has nothing to do with where the quarterback is because i'm going to be right here and when we are inside foot's up
But just for the steps of the route or the steps of the drill
So our right foot's going to be up i'm going to say go left they go three steps
The third step is the stick
Step or the stick cut
So I come off the ball set go it's one two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three
Coming out right here. Got you guys on an outback. Yep
six
All right
Hey, so
Few extra steps on the second one good on the steps person is good on the steps
The reason why you took five steps is because you know what i'm saying? Don't worry about it. Like I don't need anybody to try to get
It's just these things right so what you're doing is you're going one two
So this back foot drags
So that's your first step two, three, four, five and that's where the extra step's going to be right and if I drag and I get stuck
So it's like one two here so I can just push open up and my foot's inside my frame
So I don't need to drag and just get out set go
Six three steps good walking step not bad good job. Okay
If I had my outside receiver running a hitch and the slot was running a quarter does anybody know what that passing concept is called
Smash right love that versus cover two because the corner stays with the hitch
And then you have that corner route now the thing about the corner route versus two eye safeties in on smash
Is the qb throwing it with touch or on a line?
On a line to protect you from the safety. So why I say that is because your head can snap around fast on this corner
Okay, left foot's up
Which foot is my outside foot right or left?
Right foot so I only count the steps that I take with my right foot
The reason why we run routes off the steps is as you guys get older like I'm talking college ball
Every route versus zone coverage is off the steps because the timing it's no longer go run a 10-yard corner
Versus man coverage. You can't work a release and count your steps. So it turns into yardage
You have to be able to do both as a receiver because you never know what type of offensive system
You're in the more often than not at that level. It's off the steps. Does everybody understand?
Okay, so
I'm only counting the steps I take with my right foot. So set go do I count that one?
Yes, that would be my first outside. Do I count this one?
No, so again, it's your third outside step so it's set go
one
two
step
Head snaps around i'm throwing this on a line bringing you guys back flat
Great job
Ready to go
That's a wrap of day one of just kind of drills and just going up with the basics tomorrow
They will have dbs out here, but doing some live one-on-ones. That'll be fun
Keep that chest down no
One two
It's on
Leverage dictates the release
So for example, let's say he's outside leverage, this is the first route that we're going to be running
We're going to be running a 10 yard out. Okay, so he's outside leverage
And i'm running a 10 yard out
What release do I want to take fake outside to go back inside?
Because think about if he's outside leverage his goal is to not let me run where?
Outside so a lot of receivers because they have to run an outside breaking route. They panic right?
They see outside shade. They're like, oh crap. He's outside leverage. So they they force it
This guy's entire goal is to not let me do that
So he's going to get hands on me
And even if I release to the outside because he's getting hands and I break to my out route
I'm, not going to have enough space for the quarterback to lead me on out
Leave me on a corner or like leave it a fade
What i'd want to do with my release is i'd want to attack his lever
So that release you guys are just working with coach that like three step release
That can be good if the db is like maybe two yards away, right?
He's got some space with me
It could work if he's closer
But we're going to be working a situation where he's right up on the ball
And we're going to be working a release called the jab step or I call this a wide step
And the first step of this release is going to be something called a kick step
Kick step. So what's a kick step?
Yeah, yeah, so hey and some people will say like that's a false step and there are situations where that is a false step
But I like it when you have a close press coverage db when he's outside leverage because it creates a little bit more speed
And it allows us to sell the release with my hips because that's what a disciplined db is going to be watching
He's going to be watching my head. So if he's outside ----, I got him on 10 yard out
I'm, not going to force it. I'm going to attack his leverage. I want to make them think that I am trying to force it
Right. So the first step you're going to pretend like there is a plug
Behind your front foot even with your back foot. It's just a quick step and you're stepping on the plug
So it's here to load up your hips
Jab to attack his leverage to get him to move and then I take the inside balls
Now whatever I'm versus press
What is my goal with this db? What do I want to do with him stack good?
I want to stack so my goal is to get him to fight to the outside
I want to get my hip right past his hip. Does anybody know what that's called getting?
Skinny, yeah, I want to get skinny. So I want to get right past his hip
I'm, probably dipping my shoulder so I get over the top of him. So at the top of the rake
What's a move I can use that we worked yesterday?
I can use a rocker step and get some space and you don't even have to use a rocker step to do something
So we're not going to work that situation. We're going to work that situation second
The first situation is going to be like let's say I got a db who's really fast. Maybe good technique
Maybe I can't stack him. I still want to run the route the same way. This is where receivers panic
So let's say we line up here. I give him this jab. Maybe he bites him just a little bit
Now when I go to the inside, let's say he plays it
And he's right on my hip
So I can't just like smooth it out and run something different
I still have to run my 10 yard out and he's right next to me. What should I do when I get to 10?
Throw by and I got to do what with my hips drop my hips throw by and cut back underneath
Now the break is slightly slower than if you were to just cut off a one foot like what we worked on yesterday
but
We gave the quarterback so much space to the outside because I didn't force the outside release versus outside chain press
Set go jab
Inside release at 10. Everybody is dropping their hips
drop
Right before you drop your hips
Raise up. Yeah, you feel that attached and all I would say to you think about your chin being down because you're coming up
And you go here
If you focus on just tucking your chin not to like your chest or anything if you focus on tucking your chin
That'll help you
Not raise up and slit your hips too. Yes, sir. Does that make sense? Yes, sir
All right inside chain don't want to force the inside release on the inside breaking route
It is the exact same first step, but it's not as big of a step
It's a short step so we could push off of it. So you guys hear orange cones the db yellow cones the db
It's set go one two
Outside release dip this shoulder now we're treating it like we restacked
At 10 and guys listen at 10. We're working a rocker step. So at about 10 yards
one two
Out on the post right there
Way to finish did you feel yourself get a little stuck on the release?
Yeah a little bit. I was what happened was you sold it great your hips went with it, which was good
But if this inside foot if I go one and I go too much of an open with my toe, I can't push and get out
I get stuck a little bit. You know what i'm saying?
So it's almost like your body has to move. Yeah, your body's got to move separate from your feet
My feet want to stay going forward
But my body goes here so I can still push off but I get the same type of cell. Is there does that make sense?
All right
Three
Harder
Gotta keep running
That's a wrap on the first down training, what do you think?
It was good, I guess. I mean sucks that they didn't have real db up there again
Yeah, they just had to swap up but it is what it is, I guess and it wasn't like he learned anything new necessarily
It was a lot of just repetition obviously learning some of the same things the releases the
How to break down get going get in and out of breaks and just uh, you know
Be a better route runner and release runner. We start spring football monday. Hopefully that's sharpened him up. Y'all stay tuned for the next video
