Why men need to dress well again
The bar has never been lower when it comes to the way men dress and choose to present themselves.
You don't have to go back that long ago in history when it was understood that a man should take
pride in his appearance and the way that he looked was a sign of not only respect for himself
but also respect and good manners toward others. While the trend today might be for an increasingly
casual and relaxed aesthetic, I would argue the case that it's time men started dressing well
again. And in today's video I'm going to share with you six very good reasons why.
Hello, my name is James and I am on a mission to create a generation of gentlemen. A very
important reason why men should dress up again is because it demonstrates self-respect. Everybody
understands that to put on a suit, even to put on a button-down shirt, requires a small level of
effort and making that effort for yourself reminds you that actually what I'm doing does matter. The
place that I'm going does matter and I'm going to take pride in how I look. Today many people
understand the importance of exercise, of going to the gym for their body, for their physical health.
Well, I would argue that we are neglecting our mental health by neglecting our appearance. I
challenge any man to put on a well-tailored, well-fitting suit, a polished pair of shoes,
and tell me that he doesn't feel better about himself. On the other hand, if you wake up every
day and reach for a pair of sweatpants, for a baggy t-shirt, for a hoodie, you are subconsciously
communicating to yourself that you don't matter, you don't deserve to look good. And in today's
crisis of mental male health, it's time we started taking dressing well more seriously. But dressing
well isn't just about having respect for yourself, it's also about showing respect for others.
There's a reason why at a wedding or a funeral it's understood that we always put on a suit,
we put on a shirt and tie. It's because we acknowledge the significance of the occasion for
the bride and groom or for the deceased. Use your clothing and your appearance as a way to show
the people you work with, the customers you serve, the friends you are around, your family,
all of those people in your life. Show them that they matter by making an effort with your
appearance. Tom Ford said it best when he said, dressing well is simply good manners. When you
dress well, you contribute toward making the world a more beautiful place. Think about it,
when you go to a restaurant, you understand that the way the restaurant is decorated,
the pictures on the wall, the way the table is laid, it all contributes to a good experience,
it contributes to the atmosphere and the ambiance of the place. Well, wherever you go,
you also become part of the place. We live at a time when dress codes aren't strictly enforced
in many establishments, so it's your personal responsibility as a good citizen to dress in a
way that compliments and adds to the experience of everybody else. And very importantly, the way
we dress not only tells the world who you are, but it also tells people how to treat you. I don't
disagree with you that the person you are underneath the clothes and the values and the
way you live your life is much more important, really, than your style. But as humans, we can't
help but make subconscious, snap-second judgements about people based on their appearances. And if
you dress in a way that is sloppy, unpolished, unkempt, unfortunately, you are sending a message
that who you are and what you do is not important. And I hear experiences all the time from men who
tell me that they began dressing better and started receiving better treatment in places
like airports, in restaurants and even at work. They discovered that the work they did and what
they said was all of a sudden taken a lot more seriously. And I don't know about you, but I
personally find that dressing well simply makes life much more fun. How dreary it is to simply
wear the same jeans, the same t-shirts, the same running shoes and sweatpants day after day.
It feels fun to pick out a suit, to find a tie and a shirt that looks good, to pick out the pocket
square that picks up a detail on the tie or a detail on the shirt. I enjoy dressing well. It's
part of the art of life. In the same way that I think about the places I'd like to go and the
people I'd like to be around, I think about the clothes I'd like to wear. Now I understand that
some men may find the idea of dressing well, learning about style intimidating. And if so,
that's okay. It's just like any other skill you may wish to learn. When you first start going to
the gym or working out, it's exhausting. You don't fully understand how to do the exercises properly
and it's really not that fun. But once you gain a certain level of competency, it only becomes more
and more rewarding. And the exact same thing also applies with clothing. And finally, ZZ Top said it
best, every girl's crazy for a sharp-dressed man. Imagine being a woman on today's dating market.
You look around and every guy is wearing backwards baseball caps, sweatpants, running shoes. Imagine
then you finally come across a guy who knows how to dress, how to present himself. It's often been
said that a two-piece suit to a woman is like lingerie to a man. And even if you are happily
married or happily in a relationship, why not give your partner, give your lady that gift of being
with a well-dressed, stylish man whom she finds incredibly dashing, handsome and attractive. In my
opinion, it's even a form of love language to make an effort for one's partner, to show her with your
clothing that the time you spend together is significant and you want to look your best for her.
Now, maybe you're persuaded on the merits of dressing well and you are feeling inspired to go
and rehaul your wardrobe and reinvent yourself a little. But perhaps you find the knowledge and
knowing exactly what to do and how to create a style that works for you rather intimidating.
