Why Do the Gods Know Everything Humans Do

You did it in secret. No one saw. So how did heaven find out?

The old teaching says a god stands three feet above your head. In the Chinese tradition, heaven is not a throne room. It is a government, with clerks, registers, and reports that never stop moving. A Stove God listens all year in your kitchen, and his wife writes down every word spoken in the house. Three corpse spirits living inside your body climb out while you sleep to file their own reports, and the Director of Destinies cuts years or days from your life for what they say. The City God keeps a secret register of everything that happens in his town, and in the first court of the dead a great mirror replays your whole life, with nothing left out.

Then comes the story of Liao-Fan, a man whose entire life was calculated in advance by a master of numbers: no highest degree, no son, dead at fifty three. For twenty years every prediction came true. Then a Zen master laughed at him, handed him a ledger in which good deeds were priced like goods in a market, and taught him to rewrite the account. And at the end, the oldest proof of all: a murdered minister who came back in broad daylight, before a crowd of witnesses, to settle his own entry in the book.
