Where Do Demons Hide in the Human World

7 Video Views·Nov 7, 2026

Where do demons hide in the human world? Not in graveyards, say the old teachers of the East. They hide in plain sight: in anger, in greed, in habit, carried and fed by the very people they ruin.

This episode follows the tradition's own map of the hiding places. Mara, the lord of desire, whose throne stands wherever a heart agrees with him. The three poisons at the hub of the Wheel of Life: delusion, greed, and anger. Pu Songling's tale of the Painted Skin, the scholar who carried his demon home in his own arms and called it love. The demon revealing mirror that showed a palace its beloved consort was a nine tailed fox. And the Zen master Hakuin's dream of the mirrors in the sleeves, which showed him the last address of all.

Next episode: Journey to the West Decoded, the most famous journey in the East, and why its demons were never only on the road.

Hidden Legends of the East: Eastern legends, gods, and miracles, explained for Western minds. New episodes every week.
