He ordered God erased from an entire country. Then, in the darkest nights of the war, the most powerful atheist on earth was knocking on the door he himself had nailed shut.

This episode follows the old church people's account of Stalin and Heaven: the seminary boy raised by a praying mother; the war on the churches that left only a few hundred standing; the conditions tradition says the Mother of God gave through Metropolitan Ilya in 1941 (open the churches, free the priests, carry the Kazan icon around the besieged cities); the blind Saint Matrona, who is said to have told him how the war would end; and the documented night in 1943 when Stalin met the three metropolitans and the churches of Russia began to open again. What did he actually believe in the dark? The history books and the church people give two different answers, and both are in this episode.

Next episode: Master Xu Yun, the monk who lived 120 years and was said to have visited Heaven while still in the body.
