Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh participate in a music trivia game to promote their film *Mayday*. The two actors share personal anecdotes about legendary artists like David Bowie and George Michael while discussing their tastes in pop, punk, and cinematic music.
Who's the bigger music aficionado?
I don't know. I mean, I love Asian music.
One thousand million percent.
Are we playing a concerto?
This is going to be ritual humiliation.
I'm happy to accept.
Which classical works were created in the 80s?
Not many, I imagine.
Before we start with the music, can you just introduce yourselves?
My name is Ryan Reynolds
and I am the co-star of a film
called Mayday, which is on Apple TV.
And I'm Kenneth Branagh and I am
the other guy in Mayday
with the gorgeous Ryan Reynolds on Apple TV now.
Okay, are you ready?
Whoever gets the artist first wins.
David Bowie.
Feet!
David Bowie.
Some people would fall for the vanilla ice trap.
You almost did.
How did you know?
I could tell. You were kind of doing a little impression.
Do we have time for a 30 second anecdote?
So, okay, I'm 22, 23
I'm on my first press tour. It's for a movie called Van Wilder.
I'm in Cologne, Germany.
I'm jet lagged. I go to sleep.
Next door, oh my god,
it's like a racket, a party.
I don't know what's happening. It's great.
And suddenly, this 22, 23 year old guy, me,
I'm like an old man. I want to go knock on the door
and be, you kids, keep it down over there.
Get off my lawn.
I'm about to go over there and knock on the door
and I just think better. I can't be that guy.
I'm too young for this ----.
So I go back. I try to go to bed.
Wake up the next morning. I come out.
I'm like just shuffling. Crappy sleep.
The door opens on the other room
and out comes David Bowie.
Did you upbraid him?
Walks right past. Hits me with that heterochromia.
Boom!
Hello.
And I'm just like,
ha ha ha.
Come on, I'll give it to you, Ryan.
Police, every breath you take.
So I was listening to that song before
and I was noticing that
the beat is off.
It is. It's different from the guitar.
Yes. There's a term for that.
Something with syncopation or asyncopation
or something like that.
Everybody thought it was a kind of love song
and then it became understood as a stalker song.
Stalker song.
I've tried to use it in
maybe seven movies. Hard to get?
No, music in a movie is very,
what works in your head
and I love a needle drop in a movie.
Yeah, join the club.
It works in your head. It doesn't necessarily work to picture.
And you just end up cycling through
and in the middle of the night something,
oh, that's the song. And then it works.
I really remember where I was when I first
heard that. I was in Sydney, Australia
and I was 22 years old.
I was alone. I just arrived from
London. I was very homesick.
And then I heard this
song which was so catchy
that it caught my attention and cured my homesickness
for a while. Even though, of course, I did not wish
to be stalked at that point, but I did enjoy
a terrific pop song.
It's 1 to 1.
There's only one, isn't there?
Just play it for a second, please.
I think it's going to be very sad at this point, don't you?
I suppose it is. So mournful, isn't it?
Do we just tie this one up? Same time, 3, 2, 1.
Cindy Lauper. Thank you very much.
Icon.
Icon. There was a viral video of her
years ago, maybe five years ago, where she
was waiting for a plane and she was stuck at
like LaGuardia or some hellhole
and she grabbed the mic and sang that song.
She also does the wackiest
video where girls just want to have
fun with unusual dance moves
including the...
Oh, yeah.
And the lip goes up a lot.
What about this one?
I don't know it yet.
I know the song. I just don't know it.
She's an American, but she lives in the UK.
Of course. It's an American girl.
Bowie, right? This song?
Isn't this an American girl? Who is this?
It's Chrissy Hines.
Chrissy Hines.
She moved over to England, to London
when she wanted to be part of the scene.
Sex Pistols, Punk Rock.
She remains like this sort of pioneer.
Just a, I don't know,
rock idol.
Where punk rock turned into pop.
I mean, nothing like it.
Did you like UK punk jam?
I do much when I was older. I didn't love it as much when I was younger.
I liked big,
soaring, thematic, anthemic kind of pop
when I was younger.
And then as I got older, I still like the anthemic pop.
I get upset when people are too cool
for everything in music.
But boy, man.
I love a ballad.
Have you ever rocked out to
Total Eclipse of the Heart?
I've karaoke'd that one.
I don't like karaoke, but I had to because it's Total Eclipse of the Heart.
And it takes about three hours of your time, doesn't it?
I mean, from start to end.
And if you think of what Bonnie goes through when she does that.
Imagine Don Henley trying to sing
American Pie over and over again.
A 15, 20 minute song right there.
Oh, this is George.
Oh my God.
When I was maybe 22 as well,
I went out to dancing all night
with Sandra Bullock and George Michael.
I'd known Sandy for a while,
but I did not know George.
It was one of the greatest nights of my life.
He was on the dance floor a little bit, but it was just mild.
He wasn't shaking it.
But I just kept going,
George Michael. I'm dancing right next to George Michael.
I met him once on a plane.
Very nice. He didn't know me from a bar of soap,
but it was a very nice interchange
of just thank you for what you've done.
You're very welcome. Thank you. How are you? How's your day?
Very nice. Thank you.
I would be pretty impressed meeting Andrew Ridgeley, too.
I'd better be impressed by meeting you, too.
When's the movie out?
September 4th.
That's very soon.
It's now.
Today, probably.
Are we kicking ass?
Are we laughing?
This man is saving my ass the whole movie while kicking other ass.
Action, comedy, comedy, action.
It's wild.
It's everything you want in a buddy action comedy.
It's fun. It's a really bloody funny film.
We're tickled pink to be in it.
We're very proud of it, and we hope people bloody love it.
Thank you.
Jack, thank you for having us.
That was really phenomenal.
That was a lot of fun.
