Ryan Huska and his young guns
on the Calgary Flames quite blatantly performed a miracle
last night as they beat the defending Stanley
Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes for their
second win of this season.
But after taking a deep dive,
this could be a sign of great things to come.
We're going to get to all that more in this video
but first I want to welcome you to Flames
Digest, I'm Mark Griffith.
If you're new around here and you love
the Flames make sure to subscribe so you can
stay up to date on all the latest news, updates,
sports and rumors revolving around your Calgary
Flames.
We would love to welcome you to the Flames
Digest family and it's all about last night's
game this is where said miracle was performed
as Calgary upset the Carolina Hurricanes you know
you can call it a scheduled win it was the second
of a back-to-back for the Hurricanes they had just
played in Winnipeg the night before
which is pretty close but not that close so there was
some travel mileage and time put
into that but no matter how you chalk it up the Flames won and they
looked good in this game they had a lot of people stand out
and that's essentially what i'm going to
be getting into but shout out to Ryan Huska
for actually doing something right he really just
leaned on the young guys
and they played great Devin Cooley was awesome I'm gonna focus mostly
on Gridden Parekh Frosty of course a little bit of Kostanya as well
but there are so many names
we can throw in there of guys who played really good
but first I'm just gonna pull up the box
score here so Cooley like I said he was great
and what was even better than his you know only
two goal against performance on 36 shots
is 34 save performance .944 save percentage 2.03 goals
against average even better than that performance
was of course his post-game interview because he
you know was playing in his unconscious mind he's using
his unconscious brain he played really well
when he's too conscious according to him he's not all
that good of a goalie apparently he
felt nothing after the win it was just overall what a performance
but what an even better
interview he doubled down this morning again
and uh you know said everything he said last night was
absolutely true but it was so funny once again
the most quotable goalie in the league maybe of all
time to be honest that's a stretch
but my goodness does this guy have some all-timers of interviews
but it was just another great one
and a great performance for him his first really good
performance of the year Frosty led
the way offensively with a goal and an assist Sharky
and Gridden got the other goals
and gotta be honest all three of the goals were really really
good um Coronado gets an assist Faraby gets
an assist Middleton gets an assist and Zane
Parekh gets an assist on a really nice feed to uh Frost for his one
but I am going to focus well
actually real quick I'll pull up the entire box score
in in case you want to take a look at it
uh for the Flames want to take a deeper dive
into all the stats here only one pairing or one a
couple players I should say didn't do well
in terms of plus minus Stroman Pospisil but I mean
is that all that unexpected not really now let me focus
on Cooley as well so again we're going to
pull up his stat line but go a little bit deeper
and make it more of a digest sports uh you know
graphic here and I mean what a photo of Cooley he's got
the best smile in the league too he just
loves his you know math and everything
but um uh yeah almost played I don't know why that doesn't
say 60 minutes I guess there was a little bit
of time where he's pulled when you're going on the
power play that's why um but yeah again
a .944 save percentage was great his best by far so far this
year um and what was the key for both him
and the team as you can see in this graphic was that the
team did really well on the special teams he made three out
of three saves on the penalty kill made
two out of two saves on the power play too he had
to make a couple saves when we were on the power
play is that unexpected no of course not uh
and stopped 29 of 31 even strength shots as well so
we have been a pretty good even strength team we haven't
been a great special teams team kind of in
the middle of the pack for both especially
in terms of finishing chances but the goaltending
was spectacular all over the place
and we do take a look at his starts this year it was his first
quality start as we know if you've been watching all the videos
so far this season we know for
Dustin Wolf he really only has one quality start as well
and it was that win against Anaheim but
for Cooley it's his first above .900 save percentage start i mean
that one against Colorado was
horrendous but did anyone expect differently not really
but it's his first win in his first game
where he's well above the uh you know save versus expected
which is fantastic it really was a great
one for him i know Carolina hit three posts in this one
or at least three posts in this one might
have hit more um and there might have been a little bit of luck
but overall Cooley deserved
that win as did the Flames
and uh a great quote here from Cooley he said everyone's panicking
about the goalies everyone just chill out we're gonna
be fine Dustin's gonna be fine i'm gonna be
fine sometimes you just have a bad start
and things aren't going your way and it was certainly a way
to bounce back last night but one thing i really wanted
to focus on as well as the goaltending was
kind of these young guys Eric Francis wrote an article
and i'm actually not going to dive into
the article just this and then get into my own graphics again
but he wrote Matt Vegele and
Zane Parekh reminded everyone in a 69 second span on Sunday,
that's quite the alliteration,
why the future in Calgary could be far more exciting than
the present suggests. Eric Francis
explains how the young duo sparked the Flames' upset
of the Hurricanes. And it's true, right
there, kind of late in the second period, I believe it was.
Yeah, Parekh with a great assist,
Gritten finally with a goal this year, which was great to see.
And again, all three goals in this
game were great. Gritten, it was crazy of him
to get that shot off. The Frost goal was a great
passing play and then the the Sharky goal as well
to win it in the third um was a great shot by him
it popped the water bottle and everything
but it was a good play as well but we'll start with
Gritten out of all of these guys as uh again
for him he finally scored a goal this year after he
seemed quite you know confident in the offseason
that he would lead the Flames in goals this
upcoming season um the stat line isn't exactly
you know gonna blow you away just the one hit a
couple shots but it's just that he got that goal
which is so fantastic crazy play as well where
Kuznetsov was on the ice forever
and the Flames finally went the other way and scored a goal
but if we get into his minutes
so far this year like I said for Huska he was more willing to lean
into the young guys last night
and Gritten was well over his season average of 14 and a half minutes
of almost 16 minutes of ice time last night
so really you know leaned more on him and some of
the other younger guys that it will get into but it was just
so happy for Gritten once again and
why did this goal specifically matter
as we just saw you know the stat line a second ago isn't
exactly amazing it was a quick release through traffic
so it was actually a nice goal the skill
changes the game after a long defensive shift again they
were in their own zone forever I think
again I think it was Kuznetsov for like three minutes
or something went the other way and scored
and a younger player gets to make
the difference here he finally you know got the monkey off his
back and finally seemed to make a difference offensively
in this game which has been lacking
from Gritten so far this season another guy that both Eric Francis
and myself want to focus on is
Zane Perreca as he got an assist in this one
but he was just way more looked way more confident and
dynamic out there he really showed the offensive prowess
that we know is the key to his game again
it was a great feed on the goal it was overall just
a beautiful play it's not like he made the
only nice pass on that play
but he is well he played without Middleton by his side in this game
and it's funny because it's the exact opposite
of what we all thought would happen but it almost
unlocked him a little bit more being beside Kuznetsov
and being maybe leaned on a little
bit more I'm glad he didn't play too many minutes
because I think that's been an issue so far this
year but it was great that he was able to yeah just
be unlocked a little bit more looked a bit
more confident was great in front of the home crowd
so the Frost goal here again this is the
one that was assisted by Zane it was in the second period very late
in the period it was a beautiful
goal made it 2-1 and it was just great again assisted by Parekh
and Farabi it was just a
beautiful play that's the little graphic of it
and all the details you need it says the shot was a
tip in it was more of like a finish
at the end it's it's hard to say I mean it wasn't a tip in
he did have to shoot it but Frost is another guy
that we definitely can focus on because again he
had the most points for the Flames in this game
and arguably the best Flames for this season but
that's definitely a conversation to be had he had a goal
and an assist he was a plus one on the night
played almost 16 minutes as well just like Gritton
and overall was fantastic the key thing for me
here as well other than the points is the 80%
in the face-off dot he was spectacular another guy
who was leaned upon quite a bit was actually Jonathan Castagna he
also played almost 16
minutes funny that almost all these guys time
on ice looks almost the exact same but he was
doing well in the face-off dot as well he didn't get any points
but he was really really leaned
upon in important moments you know to kind
of finish off this game especially late in the third
which was awesome to see him you know get
an elevated role more responsibility and he thrived
in there I thought you know again it's not like he got any points
but this was probably his best
game of the season which i was so happy to see
and as you can tell here we looked at Gridden's
minutes so far this season Kustanyan was well above
his season average of 11 minutes and 17 seconds
almost playing 16 minutes as you can tell once again Huska
was leaning on the young guys lo and
behold it actually resulted in a huge win again
this was an upset over a very favored Carolina
team for us to get our second win of the season
and for Kustanyan you know it's more than just
the points he makes his case his line sustained pressure all game
which I thought was great he did
have a backhand chance that nearly brought him
his first NHL goal it would have been awesome if he
had gotten that goal but unfortunately didn't
and as we just saw Huska rewarded his effort with
more opportunity more ice time more opportunity he
was on the backland line which is always going to
get you know quite a bit of playing time under Huska
but still he thrived in that position
which I was very very pleased to see for him
so where does this bring us in terms of points now
I'll move remove my head here uh it actually moves us up
to not even bottom of the league anymore
we're within striking distance of Vancouver at this point
but LA still the only team with a win
they've only played six games I don't know why
they haven't played at all yet but uh yeah we're
now on four points LA just on two uh
and we're not far behind Chicago and Vancouver now is that
what people want to see not necessarily
but it does mean we're only five points out of the
playoffs which is uh not where we want to be at the end of the season
but it's okay to be there
now um but that's kind of what's going
on in the wild card picture the best way to show this is
like my favorite graphic to show
but it's the pacific race look at this and they're off where's
the flames oh they take a huge dip
and they're just in the bottom there for essentially all of
october here but look at that we're ahead of the kings
and that is where we remain as of right now
Two wins, six losses in eight games for four points.
Huska, again, a couple of quotes from him
will bring my face back.
Hey guys.
He says, you want them to have the confidence
in those situations that they can be difference makers
and they can attack the game.
That is of course him talking about the younger guys
in which he did lean upon them,
which was fantastic to see.
So props to all the guys for playing so well last night,
but honestly props to Huska as well
for doing some good coaching.
I know myself and a lot of the fan base,
I mean definitely the comment section
of this channel aren't big Husker guys but he did some
very good coaching last night it was really nice to see
and it resulted in honestly what I think
was Calgary's best game so far
this season one against Anaheim you can say that as well
this was against a far superior opponent
so do you agree a yes the young guns made the difference
b it was the most exciting but Cooley was the difference
or c it was a big step with more to
prove feel free to let me know in which way
was this the best game of the season for the Flames
now let's get into the comment of the day to wrap up
this video as we love to do here on the channel
comes from yesterday's video of course comes
from good old one of these years saying white cloud has
done and said all the right things since coming to Calgary
and heard nothing but trade talk
in return sometimes I wish this business could have more of a heart
and that's truth as soon
as he got here it was already how can we flip White Cloud
and he has done and said all the
right things been so involved in the community always says
the right things but it's just you
know in return gets that trade talk that's what happens
when you're just a valuable player i
suppose especially on a great conroy team
but um yeah it is a little heartless at times business
does take over the human side
but it's good to recognize the human side no matter what thank you
so much for watching this video please subscribe
if you like what you saw here today and have a
wonderful rest of your day
