This just answered the biggest question
about Sean Sweeney and the Magic.
After one practice, we're already hearing players
talk about his direct coaching,
his demand for communication,
and the level of buy-in he's getting from this team.
And what Sweeney had to say about this group
tells us a lot about what's already happening
behind the scenes.
I feel like as a Magic fan,
this is exactly what you wanna hear.
What's good with it?
It's your big Unc Eric, back again with Magic Digest.
I welcome you in.
Man, basketball is around the corner.
The Magic's first preseason game is on October 7th.
It's like right there.
We're in training camp right now.
We're gonna get into day one of training camp.
But first, I wanna let you know that this video
was brought to you by our good friends over on Calshi.
On Calshi, you're trading directly against other users,
not the house like traditional sports books.
You're buying yes or no contracts
on the outcome of events across sports,
politics, or even the weather.
For example, again, I'm looking at this WNBA champion.
If you look at the markets,
because of Las Vegas' game one win
and show out by the GOAT
and Minnesota's game one loss,
the market has flipped.
But if you wanna take your $25
and put it on Minnesota to win,
you can get a payout of 107.72.
And that is thanks to our good friends over on Calshi.
If you're interested in using Calshi,
use the link in the description and pin comment
and code DigestNBA to get $55 added to your account
instantly when you trade your first 25.
Big thanks to our friends over at Calshi.
We're gonna get into this first day of training camp.
And what I wanna focus on is the fact that we know
there's no new additions to this team
other than bringing back Vooch.
All the players are the same
other than the rookie Isaiah Nelson.
So the big change is 100% Sean Sweeney
and the coaching staff
and what they're gonna bring to this team.
So I was very interested to see just what we will learn
from the first day of training camp, what was being said.
Now, if we look at these direct quotes from Sean Sweeney,
we can get his idea of exactly where he was feeling
on this first day.
This is what they wanted to focus on.
For camp in general,
we want to do a great job with our teaching.
We wanna make sure we're giving these guys things
that are actionable in the games.
And then as we go, we wanna make sure we do a good job
with what I call immediate coaching.
If guys need feedback to change something or acknowledgement
cause they did something right,
we wanna make sure that we're on that right away.
Then afterwards, as a staff, we'll get through the tape
and look at it and figure out what we did, what we do well,
what we do need to improve on and what did we miss on
and then just keep building.
And I get it, that's a little bit of coach speak.
It's just a little bit of coach speak,
saying what you need to say for the cameras.
But I do think it starts to really drive home
the narrative that we're getting with this team.
That Sean Sweeney is coming in with that new energy,
like I said.
I have said this, it is really about the new energy
that he's bringing in, how his message is getting conveyed
and also how the team is hearing it.
He was asked about the level of buy-in
and what he feels so far.
The buy-in has been great.
Just in general, the guys have been really committed
to not only their individual execution, but team execution.
And I think we saw that today in their effort
and their intent.
The thing I like about this group,
Kevin Garnett was great about this
when I was around him with the Nets.
In between plays and then timeouts,
they're talking to each other.
So they're trying to coach and teach and learn.
The language that we're using as coaches,
the players are using as well,
which goes to show me, of course,
whenever you can evoke the names of big ticket,
Kevin Garnett, Giannis Antetokounmpo,
because you was there helping shape, form them
and play a part in just not only helping them
to become who they are, but also learning from them
and taking in those bits of knowledge.
Then you gotta say, hey man,
this guy could have a powerful voice
when it comes to the growth of guys like Paolo in France.
And when I hear that,
all of these guys seem to be on one accord.
And this has been something that we've talked about
since Sean Sweeney was hired.
Within that first couple of days,
all of the interviews that came out
were saying, hey man,
this guy is about these certain principles
and that's what we're focusing on.
We are locked in on these principles
and what he's trying to teach.
And now seeing it going forward after one day,
again, this is just one day of training camp,
but I'm liking what I'm hearing so far.
Now, there was one thing that I was kind of concerned on.
There was a pretty much a complete overhaul
with the coaching staff from last season to this,
but there was one main,
one major mainstay that I was very intrigued in
and that was Joe Pronte.
If you don't know,
he was brought in last year under Jamal Mosley
and kind of looked at as the main assistant coach
and offensive mastermind.
The guy who was well-respected around this league
over years and years of experience
and looked at as an offensive guy.
But we all know the struggles
that the Magic had last season with the office.
So there were some questions about keeping on Joe Pronte
and maintaining that role.
And Sean Sweeney addressed it right off the top.
He said,
Joe and I worked together in multiple spots,
Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks.
He's got 30 years of championship NBA experience.
So anytime a guy like that is on your staff
from a competency standpoint,
from a trustworthiness standpoint,
and he's at the top of the line,
not to mention he works his butt off,
he's very important to what we're doing.
So I'm hoping that, again,
with the continuity that we have got with the players,
we're hoping that these guys come in
and make their own individual adjustments
because there is no brand new name that's gonna come in
and really change the dynamic of how the players play.
You know, there's no LeBron, Jalen Brown, Giannis,
or any of the guys, Kawhi,
any of the big guys who switch teams
that's gonna come in and really change
the way this team plays because they're that important.
So it's really gonna be on the guys
and their individual growth.
And I'm interested to see what growth we get from Joe Pronte
and how he's used effectively in Sean Sweeney's system
as they work to develop an offensive identity.
What will that identity be?
Now, all of this is good, great coach speak,
but it really depends on how the players are feeling.
And we got some quotes today from P5 in France
that kind of echoed all the sentiments
that have been said so far.
Let's take a look at those.
Paulo, first, he was asked about
the first day of training camp,
what it was like in the Sean Sweeney system.
And he said, I'll say loud, definitely high energy,
just a lot of moving parts, a lot of defense details.
Yeah, pretty fun.
And you want these guys to be having fun.
If they're coming in here with that new energy,
again, keep that in mind, that new energy,
and they're feeling good about it,
then you wanna think that that can translate
to overall just more activity on the basketball court.
And France followed it up, taking it a little bit deeper.
And he said this, the practice today reminded me
of the national team a little bit.
I think what makes Sweeney very unique
is how direct he is.
He'll speak about things right away, right then and there.
I think the whole coaching staff is on the same page.
And again, that goes back to kind of the message
that we received, again, during this off season
after Sean Sweeney was hired, that accountability,
the ability to be direct and say what needs to be said,
even if it's harsh, in a way that the players receive it.
Because you can come out and yell and scream
until you're blue in the face.
But if they're not hearing you, they're not hearing you.
And I think that's a little bit
of what happened last season.
You know, it happens at a lot of coaches,
end of the road where, hey, at some point,
these guys, they just start tuning you out.
We're hoping that with the start of training camp,
we're getting some good energy going on.
I'm gonna keep you guys updated.
We're gonna be tapping in.
There's a lot more, I'm gonna be dropping some shorts.
So make sure you get involved.
