We have some genuinely kind of crazy updates
as last night was a very strange night for Flames
first round picks and prospects.
Plus, the lineup looks very interesting as the Calgary Flames aim
to get their first win of the season
in tonight's tilt against the Anaheim Ducks. We're going to
get to all that more in this video,
but first I want to welcome you to Flames Digest. I'm Mark

so a thank you in advance if you hit that subscribe button
but let's get into these first rounders as this is kind
of an update that I've never really shared
before but Ryan Pike puts it perfectly as it
was a good night for Flames first rounders and this was
just so far when he tweeted it out last night
but the Flames I mean they still have a lot of first
rounders in the system obviously there's
the guys mentioned here Zary, Potter, Reschignewitz, Hextall there's
you know guys like Perek and Gridden of course
that are playing with the Flames um you know some
some other guys as well like Carl's just recently drafted
but last night was actually really really
interesting and genuinely kind of crazy
the first guy we'll talk about is Connor Zary because he is
a former Flames first round pick back in 2020 recently waived
and sent down to the Wranglers
and he had a goal in his first game back
with the Wranglers first time in years that he has played
with them so just wanted to point this out here
that even Elliot Freedman was tweeting about how
Connor Zary scores in his first AHL game he says first AHL game it's
his first AHL game of the
season and again first one in years
but he actually opened the scoring uh in the game against the
Condors it's pretty good goal it was a good play
um got set up beautifully in front and what i like
too is that who's the first person he's hugging there
in that little screenshot it is Paul who
was of course sent down with Zary
at the same time both cleared waivers both playing for their
first game for the Wranglers in a long time Paul it's
not his first game with the Wranglers either
but first one in a while um but uh yeah that was awesome
to see Zary score it almost you know the
celebration wasn't over the top
but it almost made you feel like maybe he has a love for hockey again
a lot of people just call it you know a wake-up call
but again i was super pumped for Zary that
he did end up scoring he might not ever play
a game in the NHL with the Flames again but i was
still happy to see that for sure
and who knows maybe there is actually a happy ending with the
Flames and Zary at some point
but i'm not gonna you know hold my breath on that the next one well
I'm actually going to just put it into two,
was Cullen Potter and Jack Hextall, both scoring goals
for Michigan State. Awesome to see Potter back playing after,
you know, the horrible injury that
ended his season last year.
And then Hextall, obviously just a recent first rounder in 2026.
I know in Ryan Pike's tweet there, it says 2026 for Reshni,
of course is a 2025 first round pick,
but still Hextall, the second of two first rounders
in the most recent draft, Colin Potter,
the second of two first rounders uh isn't
that also supposed to say 2025 maybe he's just completely
tripping here maybe maybe he was a little bit excited
when he tweeted this out I swear both
uh you know Potter and Reshni were 2025 I could
also be wrong but uh yeah a couple of second first
round picks in action for the Spartans
and they did end up getting the win so super happy for them
uh they ended up winning 6-2 Hextall excited for him
as well scoring he actually got the last goal
of the game here to make it 6-2
but good that you know already we're having a couple of our guys
play you know meaningful hockey that looks like they're on a great team
which we absolutely want
we want them to develop as much as possible
and the more winning hockey you play the more hockey
you get to play and happy that they're both scoring
as well now the last guy if we go back
to the Ryan Pike tweet here is Reshney
so Reshney has two goals for North Dakota that is actually
how this game did end up finishing was with just two goals
but a 3-2 win he got the game winner as
you can see with the graphic there it was kind of all about him
which was great the key thing for me
as well is if we bring up his stats I'll put it
in the bigger window here is last year it's not like
he had a bad season he had 35 points in 36 games
but what's kind of the glaring thing here for
Flames fans is that he only scored six goals
in 36 games in just one game so far this year with
the University of North Dakota he has two goals already
so if people were you know gonna nitpick
Reshney they'd say hey maybe he's lost
his scoring touch he can't score anymore well I know we're
just one game in but already he has a third
of his goal total from last season so so excited for
Reshney seeing him play
so well I'm stoked for the world juniors this year which is something I
haven't said in a long time but I'm stoked
for the world juniors this year because Reshney will
very likely be the captain of that team put him in a leadership role
so excited to see what he can
do with the world juniors
and just continue to develop with UND this year I was so happy to see
that he got a couple goals he's going to be one
of the best players in college hockey this season
now let's get into tonight's game as the flames
are back at the dome for yet another matchup
trying to get their first win of the year
this one going against the Anaheim Ducks this one at
8 p.m tonight very excited to say that I will actually
be going to this game I hope it's not
my final game at the Saddle Dome attending in person
but super excited to go see hey if you
run into me feel free to say hi always happy to meet you guys
but what's really interesting for
me is the lineup so no one at the time of recording
this anyway has tweeted out what the lines actually
yard, but yesterday we maybe got a glimpse
of what the lineup is looking like. So there will
actually be no Sammy Hanzik
As Pat Steinberg confirmed this morning, Sam Hanzik is unavailable
and won't play tonight versus Anaheim.
He hasn't skated the last two days. I don't know if he's
just extra hurt, if he's sick, he's pregnant.
I don't know what's going on with Sammy, but either
way, he's not playing tonight.
Brendan Hoffman and Joel Hanley were on the ice late after the
optional morning skate they'll be the other scratches
which means that Sipilka is back in
and with the lines that warm up Dustin Wolf will
be the goalie tonight the lines yesterday in
practice had Sunyev on the top line taking Gritten's spot alongside Frost
and Coronado so great
opportunity here for Sunyev again i can't 100 guarantee
that these will be the lines tonight
but it's always a great indication the only thing
is that Hoffman is in here whereas he's getting
scratched with which I really hope means that Georgie
that Kistanyaw will be in there hopefully
actually centering that fourth line between Pospisil
and Klapka otherwise Gritten getting
I guess demoted to the second line but a second line of Gritten,
Stroman, Sipilka that's got to
be one of the worst second lines in the league
if not the worst second line in the league how bad
are we we're or we're 0-4 we're already
the laughingstock of the league and Sipilka is on
our second line that is just absolutely disgusting Farabee Backlund
and Sharkey are on your third
line Sharkey the best Flames player from the last game him
and Kistanyaw were kind of the only two
standouts in that shellacking from Colorado that we faced
but uh yeah deep pairings they remain the
same Nemitz with ball Kuznetsov with like cloud per rec
and Middleton so that is quite interesting
there are a couple guys that I kind of want
to highlight too one from each team uh let me pull
them up in the bigger window here the first one
is Mr. Big contract Leo Carlsson uh so a little bit
of a scouting report on him he's having you know
a relatively quiet season i'd say so far uh well
i'd say quiet he'd definitely be the best player on the Flame
so far but i'd say he's the player
to keep an eye out the most on on the Ducks tonight
is Carlsson mostly just because that
big contract he's also a very exciting player i know he's
the type of player that we would love
to see you know on our team one day
but it's a player like him anyway but I would definitely
keep an eye out for him another thing I wanted
to point out was Zane Perreault because a lot of
people have been underwhelmed by him
so far this year if we kind of take a look at where his shots
are coming from I really want him to break out I want him
to score I'm not just saying that because
I'm going to the game tonight
but it looks like he's taking a lot of his shots as you can see
from the chart here most of his shots are coming from the point
but as we've seen in the past if
He can kind of sneak up and get a little bit closer to the net.
He can score some great goals.
Remember that one against LA last season in the last game.
So I'd love to see him try
and get a little bit closer to the net and take some more shots.
He has just 0.6 expected goals on the season so far, zero goals.
So I'd love to see him really take over.
I feel like he's the player to do that on a Saturday night at the Dome.
Would love to see it.
Next graphic I'm going to show is one I showed yesterday,
but it's the points race just
because I love how sick this graphic looks.
But this is kind of the points race,
the standings race for the Pacific.
We know we're not in a race to actually win the Pacific.
We're already eight points behind Vegas.
Just four games into the year.
Of course, we're at the bottom.
I mean, I have like a depression beard going
because of how bad this season's going.
I haven't shaved in a while.
But I'm going to show that graphic as much
as I can just because I love it so much.
But we just have that decline right at the beginning of the season.
And then hopefully we'll just plateau
at the bottom and can get a top pick.
last thing i'll say for tonight's game is will
the flames get their first win i mean maybe i'm
just trying to show all the graphics that i can possibly show
but there's two options yes we'll
finally show we're a competent hockey team it might happen
but i mean let's be realistic here
no let's be realistic here mark that's probably the option
but feel free to let me know will we
get our first win tonight against the ducks now let's get
into the comment of the day to wrap up
this video as we love to do here on the channel comes
from yesterday's video of course another
