AI GeneratedRecent reports suggest Nikola Jokić may forgo an immediate extension with the Denver Nuggets, opting instead to re-sign next summer. While this leaves a small window for him to explore other options if the team stagnates, his history and expressed desire to stay in Denver indicate he remains committed to winning another championship with the Nuggets.
But now, we have a new update on Jokic as things pertain to his future with the Denver Nuggets and this is absolutely amazing news.
News that we're going to jump into because there has been a ton of discussions surrounding what's going to happen to the core aside from Jokic and both with Jokic as everyone has been made available for trades outside of him.
And guys, before we dive into it, make sure to subscribe to Nuggets Digest if you are part of that 70% that's not yet subscribed.
It's completely free to do. We're locking in and bringing you guys videos every single day on the Denver Nuggets as training camp approaches.
There's going to be a whole lot going on with the team and you don't want to miss out on any of it.
And guys, speaking of missing out, the Nuggets have missed out on the NBA finals every single year since they won that 2023 championship.
Yes, changes have happened to the core. They lost some bench pieces and things certainly became more difficult.
But now, after the front office has mismanaged a few moves including losing guys like Peyton Watson who were integral to the team and now not re-signing Bruce Brown,
there's been a lot of questions on if Jokic is really going to stick around or if he will hit a breaking point.
And now, we do have an update on that as it was reported from Bleacher Report that the prediction is that Jokic doesn't extend,
choosing to re-sign over the summer with a non-zero chance he explores other opportunities should the Nuggets continue to stagnate.
This may not seem like amazing news because the prediction is that he would look at other options.
But there's one thing that everyone is missing here. He already has looked at other options.
This has been a thing. If he hasn't done it yet, it would really take a remarkable circumstance to make Jokic even start to get antsy.
Because yeah, he's certainly looked at other opportunities but he hasn't taken any of those other opportunities
because he still believes the Nuggets can win an NBA championship.
And honestly, I'm with him. I do believe this team still has what it takes to win a championship
and which is why I'm so excited to thank Kalshi for being the sponsor of today's video.
Because guys, on Kalshi, you're trading directly against other users, not the house like traditional sportsbooks.
You are trading yes, no contracts in the outcome of events across sports, politics, or even the weather.
For example, the Nuggets winning the 2027 NBA Finals.
Yes, it's an uphill battle, but they're also going to make more moves over the next couple of weeks and months through the trade deadline
so they can build as good of a contender as possible so Jokic wants to stick around.
And guys, the best part about it is on Kalshi, if you are interested in trying out Kalshi, use the link in our description.
Trade $25 with code DigestNBA and get $25 added to your account instantly.
And guys, you will get a serious, serious payout if you trade yes on the Denver Nuggets like I am here as you can win $585.
Only 4% of traders are trading on the Nuggets to win the Finals right now.
But guys, here's the thing. We look at Denver, we look at where they are, and obviously it's an uphill battle to winning another championship.
Now, I mean, losing key pieces along the way is certainly hurt.
I mean, the backup point guard situation is rough, and frankly, the bench in general is an uphill battle.
I mean, DeMar DeRozan I think should come off the bench, he fits better that way, and he would obviously be a massive, massive, massive boost.
You really need the rest of the bench to work out as well.
Guys like Marvin Bagley need to perform, Trayvon Brazil needs to come out and instantly be good for sure.
Obviously, there's a few other pieces that you trust.
I like Spencer Jones and Julian Straw, they're a whole lot, so I do think they not only will, but have to take big leaps as well.
So, there's a lot to look at, and for a team that's spending a ton of money, more money than any team in the NBA,
frankly, there is a lot of pressure on them to go out and for them to perform.
I mean, if you're shelling out all this dough, you've got to really find a way to win.
Now, this team is low on tradable contracts.
I mean, you're not going to move Jones, you just re-sign him or Straw there,
and then you look at someone like DeRon Holmes, who, yeah, maybe he does get moved for someone else, for a team that believes in him.
You could package something else along with him to really make things work.
Do you have tradable contracts? Not per se, outside of Cam Johnson, who the Nuggets have already said they don't intend on moving at all.
And then you also see, at the bottom of it, more guys on minimum deals, and then Alpha Diallo, who we hope performs,
a really good defender who, effectively now, they hope can replace Peyton Watson,
and, well, if he doesn't, then not offensively, he's not going to, but defensively,
being able to guard multiple positions, being a great stopper and point of attack defender for this team,
as he did win a defensive player of the years overseas, is super important.
But Bleacher Report did continue to talk about where Jokic is at saying,
The Nuggets are in an odd spot as one of the top teams in the Western Conference each year,
but not quite a contender since earning the title in 2022-23.
From previously partying with veterans like Michael Porter Jr. and Katavius Caldwell-Pope,
to letting Peyton Watson go via sign-and-trade to the Cavaliers.
This summer, the Nuggets seem to be squandering the best years of Jokic's career.
They also mentioned after that, that the three-time MVP faces a situation similar to Giannis on Tenecumpos,
with a player option projected to exceed his max salary as a free agent next July.
Jokic can opt in at $62.8 million and extend for almost $214 million for three additional seasons through 2029-2030.
Or Jokic can wait until next summer to opt out and re-sign for just under $360 million over five seasons.
The initial buzz has Jokic waiting, at least for now, to decide.
Again, the prediction is that he's going to do the latter, and I expect him to.
I mean, right where Jokic is at right now,
he has said time and time again that he doesn't want to leave Denver.
I mean, even this summer, saying that,
overall, my idea is to sign next summer and stay in Denver for the rest of my life.
Ioka just told us what his plans are.
We know what he wants to do.
But the question is, how far is this going to go?
Will he lose patience?
Will he re-sign, play another year, be around 34 years old, and say,
you know what, no, I'm not going out like this.
Trade me somewhere else to a team that can build around me,
that I can still win on because this Nuggets team is falling apart at the seams.
And, frankly, you do have to blame ownership a bit,
but also the front office has not made successful moves.
The MPJ for Cameron Johnson trade was a big old swing and a miss.
On top of that, letting Peyton Watson go,
offering him contracts that were downright offensive, as Bennett DiNardo even mentioned.
It's just one of those things that, right now, when we look at Denver,
it's really hard to get excited for what the front office has been doing.
They've made good moves.
I like the Diallo signing.
It's a no-risk, high-reward move.
I love the DeRozan signing.
It's just a good move in a general sense.
I liked bringing back Spencer Jones,
even though the Thunder kind of did that to play chess against the Nuggets.
They forced the Nuggets' hand,
and the Nuggets didn't just let another restricted-free agent,
who matters too much to this team, go,
which I am happy about, and I do think was the right move overall.
Now, Kelsey Hoopes even mentioned that the NBA,
most playoff points were given without free throws over the last three years.
Jokic is on this list for a reason.
He's one of the best players in the league.
We see it mentioned on Polymark that Jokic is leading the entire NBA this decade in points,
rebounds, assists, and steals.
The only player in NBA history to ever lead a decade in four major stat categories,
playoffs included.
Jokic is not some guy who will ever come around again.
He's the best player in the history of the Nuggets.
We all know that.
I don't think anyone's going to sit here and argue David Thompson, Alex English, Mello.
Like, I just don't see that as an argument.
I don't think anyone does.
If anyone does, well, I don't even know what to say.
I mean, he's one of the top, what, seven centers in NBA history.
Right now, where Jokic is, he's shown an immense amount of patience,
and also, it's easy when you're getting paid that much.
It's hard to trade for those guys, and Jokic may be fine living it out like this.
But with the Nuggets already saying that they're willing to trade everyone not named Tim,
we're going to see sweeping changes come regardless,
and Jokic probably will ask for major moves upcoming.
Would it involve doing something as drastic as trading away Jamal?
I don't think Jokic would love that, but if it gives the Nuggets a better chance to win,
they will.
There was interest in Jalen Brown.
They knew that would cost Jamal Murray.
Nuggets were correctly interested anyway.
Frankly, Jamal hasn't played well in the playoffs since 2023.
I think there's a world where he gets moved.
I think there's a world where Aaron Gordon gets moved.
I think there's a world where both of them get moved.
I don't think there's a world that this man is in a different jersey anytime soon, if ever.
What do you guys think, though?
