If you struggle to say what you mean and you often ramble, especially in front of clients, then this is your sign that you need to learn how to simplify your message. And you do this through a powerful skill called "record and review."
That's exactly what stand-up comedians and professional speakers do in order to refine their message and sharpen what they say so that they don't repeat themselves and confuse who they're speaking to. Whether you're an agency owner, or you're in sales, or you run meetings at work, this simple process allows you to distil your message before you say it so that you come across as clear, concise, and coherent so that you stop rambling and speaking in circles!

I often struggle to communicate one strong message.
One strong message?
One strong message.
I find that I have so many ideas in my head and it's hard for me to simplify it,
and it makes me speak for a long time and don't have a clear message.
So my question is, how can I simplify so my communication is clear
and I come with one strong impactful message?
You're asking for how do I distill my communication?
Yes.
Reps, putting in the reps and then reflecting on the reps.
For example, what's something you talk about?
I own a branding agency, so I talk a lot about brand strategy, identity,
so I talk about all the research and all of that, yeah.
Beautiful, so you're having these conversations many times,
same conversations, many times with new people?
Yes.
Beautiful, okay.
So what you want to do is record yourself pretending you're talking to a client.
For how long is your pitch normally to get new clients?
How long is that pitch often?
A discovery call of 30 minutes, not long.
Have you ever sat back and watched a discovery call from top to bottom?
No.
Thank you for being honest.
But how can you ever distill something you never look back on?
Because your memory does not serve you well, so you have to watch that back and go,
and you have to build a sensitive view because you're going to be like,
oh my goodness, I said three things over and over and over again, right?
You have to catch yourself out, you have to build self-awareness.
So I want to tell you that whatever it is you want to distill,
you have to watch it over and over and over again.
And then when you watch it, what did you learn?
So you go, all right, four things.
First of all, I waffled after the story.
Second, I gave a client example, but I didn't need to give that client example
because the first story served the purpose.
And then the third thing, I kept talking in circles.
Next time you do it, record it again, focus on those three areas.
Distillation takes reps.
This is what stand-up comedians do.
They do an open mic night, they tell a joke, they watch it back, they remove one word.
They tell it again, they remove another word, and it becomes this condensed special.
Same technique.
And if, again, many of you are not using this, you must.
Put the transcript into ChatGPT.
Ask it, in terms of clarity, how clear was I?
Was there anything I could have distilled better?
Such a cheat code.
How could I distill that 30-minute call into 15 minutes?
What ideas do you have?
Boom, take it, try it, review it,
and then check that alongside your conversion rate.
So again, I look at everything as a formula.
You must reflect and review because you can't change what you don't review.
Okay?
All right?
Thank you.
