The Penguins just did the UNTHINKABLE...
Oct 6, 2026
The Pittsburgh Penguins just did the unthinkable, as last night they beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-5 in overtime.
In this video we're going to break down everything about this game, talk about the collapse that we could have ended up losing this game in overtime because of, and so much more.
You should not want to miss this episode of Penguin's Digest.
Before we dive into everything here, I just want to say around the road, we're at 3,000 subscribers here on the channel, so if you're new here, you want us to update on the latest news around the Pittsburgh Penguins.

But yes, today we are back talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins, as last night they almost had a really bad collapse that would have led to them losing this game.
But luckily, Tommy Novak becomes the hero in overtime to save this two points for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But a very highly offensive game from this Pittsburgh Penguins team that looked great.
And then just, they kind of took their foot off the gas a little bit and allowed a really great team in the Montreal Canadiens to get back into this game.
And they're lucky that they didn't win it, but it's great to see the Penguins come out with the win in this game.
And a statement win kind of showing, hey, yeah, we can beat the best teams in the league.
And they did it with, you know, obviously a big time.
I mean, they went up like, what was it, five to one or five to two in this game at one point.
And just, they were on absolute fire.
Like, it was goal after goal.
Like, the team was red hot.
And then in the third period, it was just a bad collapse.
They come out flat and the Montreal Canadiens take advantage of that and get back into this game.
And obviously, it pushes you overtime.
But then, like I said, Tommy Novak is the hero here.
So, let's just take a little look at, like, the game score last night or the box score.
It was 30 shots, 25 in favor of the Penguins.
They did lose the power play or the faceoff battle.
They went two for four on the power play and their penalty kill was successful.
Two for two.
And then they had 21 blocks to Montreal's 12 blocks.
So, all around, great game for this penalty killing unit.
For the special teams in general, 50% on the power play, 100% on the penalty kill.
We're going to take that every night.
And obviously, coming away with the win, 6-5, you know, in the home opener as well,
which could have been maybe the last Malkin, Crosby, Letang home opener that we've ever seen.
So, great to see them come out with the win there.
And if we just take a look at the game score, kind of see how everybody played last night.
Sidney Crosby led the forward group with over 2.3 game score.
Tommy Novak obviously being second with 1.93.
On the defensive side, it was Declan Carlisle leading the blue line with 2.85 game score.
That was Eric Carlson and Chris Letang.
And Shilov finishes the game with a negative two game score,
obviously allowing this Montreal Canadiens team to get back into this game.
We'll get him in the negative game score for sure.
Let's just take a look at some key performances that we've seen last night.
Tommy Novak, two goals, one assist for three points.
Great to see him kind of emerge as a great offensive threat for this team in the middle six.
We've got Gerrard and Carlisle both getting their first goal as a Penguin,
which is great to see.
Obviously, Sam Gerrard, the Quebec native, getting his first goal as a Penguin against the Habs,
which is great for him.
Gino Malkin getting one goal to assist in this game for three points.
He had a great game here, setting up some great goals as well.
Setting up, I believe, was the goal in overtime as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong down below in the comments section.
Carlson and Letang get two assists each.
And then Shilov finishes with five goals against and an 800 save percentage.
And unfortunately, you can't really blame Shilov for this loss.
I think he made a lot of big saves earlier in the game that really kept this team into it.
And then it really comes down to the defense here.
I think the defense really, like I said, took their foot off the pedal and just kind of relaxed.
And when you do that, you're going to make bad decisions, make bad plays.
There was a couple turnovers in our defensive zone that led to some Montreal Canadiens goals.
So you really just kind of need to start, you know, when you get up this many goals,
not taking your foot off the gas, still going out, playing hard, controlling the game.
And unfortunately, we didn't see that with the Penguins last night,
which allowed a great team like the Montreal Canadiens.
When you give them that opportunity, it allows them to get back into the game.
And they almost stole one out from under us last night.
But luckily, that did not happen.
Novak did have a couple things to say on the win.
He said, obviously, two great passes.
Lucky to get on a couple, two on ones.
Good change in overtime sprung us there.
Anytime that you give up a lead like that, it feels good to come through with the two points.
That was huge for us, 100%, right?
This team, obviously, you know, they were pretty deflated going into overtime,
but they didn't let it affect them.
They came out still trying to win this game.
And obviously, like Novak says here, it was a great, great change to get them out two on one.
And he buried the goal to win the game, which was awesome to see.
So great to see the Penguins obviously get back in the win column here,
going up 2-0 on the season right now, which is great to see.
This is what Mews had to say about going to overtime down this much.
He said, you're not going to get into overtime with the best feeling.
But they stuck with it.
We found a way.
We got the two points.
We got plenty that we can look at now that we know we got to fix,
and I'm confident that this group will work to correct those things.
So that's great to see.
Obviously, Mews is kind of saying here, yeah, we didn't go in with the best feeling,
but we stuck with it.
We battled hard, and we come out with the win.
But we're not going to let this kind of roll off our backs.
We're going to work on this, correct these things,
and just kind of instill this mentality in the team to not give up.
Or not give up, but not just relax in a game.
Not just be stagnant.
Still be engaged when we're up 5-1.
Still go out there.
Try to have your best shift.
And I think this is a great quote by Mews here.
And we also hear Carlson on this situation as well.
Carlson says, I think Montreal did a better job of not giving up on the game,
and they kept pushing.
It's easy that they kind of fell out of rhythm too.
It was going to end 5-1, and nothing is going to happen.
But they didn't do that.
We had to realize that when we start losing control a little bit too long,
things like this can happen.
So great learning experience here from what Carlson is saying.
We know that if we kind of let the game go,
and Montreal starts taking control,
we got to notice that early on and try to ramp it up on our own.
So I think this is a great quote from Eric Carlson saying,
yes, we're going to learn from this.
And obviously, we're going to try not to let this happen again this season.
When we're up 5-1, yeah, it's easy to look at it and say,
okay, this game's over.
But the Montreal Canadiens didn't do that,
and that was the reason they got back into this game.
So it was a great learning experience for this core going forward as well.
Another piece of news, though, before we do wrap up here,
I do want to talk about a waiver claim that did clear.
David Gustafson was placed on waivers yesterday.
He did clear, so he didn't get picked up.
So he will be down with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in the AHL,
a guy to definitely keep our eyes on this year.
He had a good year with the Manitoba Boos in the AHL last year,
where he had 32 points, 10 goals, 22 assists,
and then with the Winnipeg Jets in 24-25.
He got into 36 games where he did have six points.
But this is a guy who just had the best year of his career down in the AHL.
He's still 26 years old, a center who shoots left, 6'3".
So this is a guy to keep our eye on this season,
a guy that if an injury does occur,
we will see him probably called back up and get into a few games.
Obviously, if there's a couple injuries, I think this is a guy that will get called up,
a guy who's, I think, ready to kind of come up and fill that role.
I don't think he's an everyday NHL type of guy,
but he's definitely a fringe NHL player that we can rely on
if something happens in terms of, you know, obviously injuries and stuff like that.
So definitely something to keep your eye on.
Good that this waiver did a clear for us as well.
But yeah, it's a good game last night.
The Penguins come away with the win.
Now it's 2-0-0 on the season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As tomorrow at 7.30 Eastern, they will be taking on the Winnipeg Jets
who are coming off a big win this afternoon.
So that'll be an interesting game for sure.
We're going to be back tomorrow teeing up everything about this matchup.
