While the team showed a late rally and welcomed back key players, significant concerns remain regarding their defensive discipline and the current performance of their goaltending.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have a big problem
as they lose yet another game in this season
and it's causing big questions
to be asked towards the future of the crease.
In this video, we're going to break down everything about
this horrible loss to the Washington Capitals.
We're going to talk about what needs to be fixed going forward
and see what we can do about this goalie situation.

But yes, today we're back talking about the Washington
Capitals beating up on the Penguins in last night's game.
Unfortunately, it was a devastating loss for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We were hoping to get one over on Ovi
in our first meeting with him in his final season.
Unfortunately, we ended up on the bad side of it.
And it was a lot to do with a lot of mistakes
that the Pittsburgh Penguins did have in last night's game,
which is very, very unfortunate.
Obviously, we want to go out and put our best foot forward every time,
but Pittsburgh's mistakes fueled Washington's win last night.
And, of course, as you know, it
was a 5-3 win for the Washington Capitals
after it was a 1-1 game, you know, going into the end of the first.
The Capitals scored three straight goals going into the second,
and they kind of lost from there.
We lost control of the game after that,
and we tried to rally back late,
but, unfortunately, we didn't have enough to come up with the win.
And yeah, this is two straight games.
We're talking about a collapse that leads to us losing the game.
So hopefully, you know, and it could have
been three if we didn't beat Montreal in overtime.
So one thing that we need to do going forward is not collapse.
Like we need to hold the lead, control the game.
And unfortunately, we're not seeing that, right?
Obviously, we tied it up one to one.
And that was our kind of momentum shift to kind
of get forward, try to get another goal.
But unfortunately, we allowed three straight on us after that.
And obviously, like I was alluding to, it was a lot of costly mistakes.
Looking at the timeline here, it was Bevilier opening
the scoring after a turnover that led to a breakaway.
Then it was Dubois making it 3-1
as Shilaz loses the puck behind the net.
And then it was Tuck making it 4-1
and ultimately the game-winning goal after an intercepted pass.
So that's three big turnovers that led
to three big goals for the Washington Capitals
and ultimately the reason why we lost this game last night.
It's very unfortunate that it went this way,
But it seems like this is the way it's
been going over the last three games even.
We've been just costly turnovers, costly mistakes,
bad passes have been losing us games.
And we need to fix this going forward
or we're never going to get back to the playoffs like we did last year.
So we need to really fix this going forward.
And hopefully we can do that.
And hopefully that Dan Muse does have a plan
for this because this is what he had to say.
he said we got to control the momentum of the game
and that's 100% what they got to do right
like when you get the momentum back in your favor
and it's what a 1-1 game you got to you know go
out with a little bit of extra fire have
a little bit uh you know more energy during your shifts and
trying to score goals and and it will eventually come
but when you fall flat after scoring tying
the game and you're throwing these you know errant passes
and um you know just creating bad plays
especially that she lost one where he lost
the puck like you know you need to be smarter with
your decisions and hopefully we can see
that going forward and I think it's something that
Dan Muse is really going to try to instill in this team going forward
because obviously the
frustrating part about this Penguins team
is that they look good five on five they do look like a
team that can win a lot of five
on five games like where they're scoring goals and they're out
battling them and winning the board battles
and stuff like this but unfortunately it's the mistakes
it's the turnovers it's everything that comes along
with the bad play uh that is losing us
games because if we stop these you know
or limit these uh chances and that they're getting off
turnovers and giveaways then we can start to win games right
because that's three goals in this
game three goals that were uh turned over
and caused into goals and if we didn't do that and
those goals don't count we win this game three to two
so that's three big mistakes that cost us uh
this game, and unfortunately, it was the way it went,
and we weren't able to get it back.
There was a late rally, but unfortunately,
we just couldn't get it back at the end of
this game, so basically, what we're saying
is we've got to protect the puck on opening
shifts, give the goalies safe outlets,
because right now, we're really not giving them that
option, and avoid risky passes across the blue line,
because that's a big thing that
was happening.
Pucks were getting picked up in a neutral zone
by the Capitals last night, and we've
really got to just be smarter with our decision-making,
smarter with our passes, and just, you know,
Make the right call, right?
Because right now, we're not making the right call.
And unfortunately, it's leading to losses.
And we need to right this shift before it gets out of hand.
But there was something good last night.
And that was Rusty coming back, sparking Pittsburgh's late rush
as he comes back here in this game
and scores the second goal of the game
for this team.
Obviously, he had one goal in this game.
It was a great return for Rusty last night.
Great to see him back in the lineup.
And obviously, producing, getting on the board for this team,
which we love to see.
Obviously, it was Tommy Novak after having
a horrible game score in the last game.
He comes out, scores one in this game,
tries to give the team a little bit of life
and try to get back into this game.
Unfortunately, we couldn't, and it was a late rally,
but it probably could have turned into something good
if Washington didn't have to score again.
Yeah, it was a great game from Rusty and Novak for sure.
And Russ says we definitely played a lot more like the team
that we want to be in the second half of that game.
So basically saying, yeah,
we had a bad first half where we let three goals in in a row.
And now, you know, in that second half, we played better team hockey.
We played a lot better.
And now we just got to take what we learned
from this game into the next one and carry it forward.
And hopefully we come out with the next win,
I believe, is against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
And obviously Robertson closed out
the game with a goal in this one as well.
I think it was Rust who scored that first goal, actually,
and then it was Robertson scoring the last goal for this team.
He scored one.
He only had eight minutes on ice last night, and he scored one goal,
so it's great to see Robertson still
contributing goal-scoring-wise for this team.
That's something I said early in this season when he started scoring.
I think this guy's going to have a good year,
and I think he's going to end the year with,
like, 20-plus goals, if I had to guess.
I really hope that we see Robertson have
a breakout year here in Pittsburgh.
And, you know, the big takeaway from this is just carry
the response forward, attack the net from the start,
get into the eyes of the goaltenders, trying to tip pucks down
and just, you know, have a good forecheck, right?
Just win these board battles, support the puck through a neutral zone.
That's something that we didn't really see, just trying to skate it in.
You know, you have a lot of skill on this team.
Try to get it into the zone without having to dump and chase.
Obviously,
I know we're a big physical team and dump and chase does work.
But sometimes you have to take it up yourself
and try to make a play happen through your own self.
and then keep the comeback urgency at even strength.
So just, you know, when you get a goal back
and you tie the game, don't just fall flat.
You know, keep going, keep pushing,
trying to get another one, try to get the lead
because if we keep, you know,
even if when we get up like four to one or whatever,
you know, for example, if we take our foot off the gas,
we're allowing teams to get right back into it
just like what happened against Montreal Canadiens.
So we just need to control the game.
We need to control the pace.
When we have the lead, be able to keep it, right?
And when we tie the game, have a little bit more energy,
go out, try to get another goal.
Like, we just need this going forward for sure.
And like I said, a big question mark for this team
is Shevlovs faces a goaltending decision
where he had back-to-back bad games for this team.
Last night, putting up an .841 save percentage,
bad turnover, five goals against.
It was a bad night for Shevlov after having,
opening the season with a shutout, he's had
two horrible starts.
Look, his game against Montreal, .800 save percentage.
He had the win, though,
and then last night's game, .815 save percentage,
five goals against.
I mean, this is not looking good for Arturs Shevlov.
I know not a lot of it comes on him.
There's a lot on the defense creating these turnovers
and not allowing him to, you know, get into position,
allowing the, you know, having to make quick decisions,
and we know when you're on the breakaway,
it's going to be hard for a goaltender to save it anyway,
but, you know, obviously the defense was better.
His numbers would be better here,
But I do think it is time for us to turn to Muroshov.
I think, obviously, we've seen him in his first game.
He put up an above .900 save percentage game.
I think it was like .915, and he looked really good.
So go back to him in this next game against Columbus
and try to see if he can come in and make
a difference here for this team going forward.
Obviously, we need cleaner puck exchanges behind the net
so it doesn't create these turnovers
and making Shevlov have to try to bail out the defense.
obviously take away uncontested slot chances
because we've seen a lot of that last game
and watched the announced starters for back-to-back.
So, obviously, you know, we've seen Shevlov come into this game,
have a bad start.
I don't think he will go back in Columbus.
I think it will be Muroshov who had a great start for them.
And right now, like I said, the next game is against Columbus.
So, you know, it is a team that I think
has some pretty good talent there.
Obviously, they got Matty Nyes now in that trade earlier this season.
So hopefully we can come in, beat the Blue Jackets.
It's a division rival.
We need to win these games.
We need to win these interdivisional games
if we want a chance of getting into the playoffs.
So hopefully we can come out, get Muroshov in the cage,
keep those momentum going forward that we had late into this game,
and hopefully it can transition into a win here
because right now we are currently fourth in this division.
We want to get going, right?
We're 2-2 right now.
We need to start going, trending in the right direction.
Beating Washington last night would have put us third in this league,
third in this division.
So it was a big game that was squandered.
Obviously,
it's early in the season, and the standings don't really matter.
But you want to be higher in the standings than Washington for sure.
But we'll have to see what happens going into Columbus.
Hopefully, they can fix a lot of these
things that we talked about today,
the turnovers.
Hopefully, Merschoff can have another good start.
And hopefully, we can come in and try to dominate this team
and try to get another win in the books for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But let me know what you guys are thinking down below.
do you think you know is it this too much to fix
are you worried about us this season or do you
think it's going to turn around for Pittsburgh let
