The Pittsburgh Penguins have fooled everyone after they beat up on the Philadelphia Flyers
on the road with a 7-0 victory.
In this video we're going to break down everything about this game and talk about a line that
really stepped up in this game and so much more.
So you guys aren't going to want to miss this episode of Penguin's Digest.
Before we dive into everything here, I just want to say we're on the road for 3,000 subscribers
here on the channel.
So if you're new here, you want to stay up to date on the latest news around the Pittsburgh
Penguins, we're your home for it here on YouTube.
But yes, if you watched the game tonight, you were in for a treat as the Pittsburgh
Penguins beat up on the Philadelphia Flyers and left an empty arena in Philly with a 7-0
victory.
It was such a great game to watch for Pittsburgh Penguins fans tonight.
It had a bit of everything.
There was a bit of scraps in front of the net, a lot of goals, and it was just a great
way to open the season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
And as the title says, they fooled everyone going into this season.
A lot of people had doubted the Pittsburgh Penguins and if they could have the offensive
output to stay and get a playoff spot again this season.
And they definitely went out there and proved all the haters wrong, putting up seven goals
against this Philadelphia Flyers team who looked very, very lackluster in this game.
But let's just dive into some of the stats here in this game.
There was 38 shots to 19 for Pittsburgh.
There was more hits on Philly's side.
More face-offs won on Philly's side by a lot, but we converted on two out of four power
play chances.
They had more penalties than us, about the same amount of giveaways.
They had two more takeaways than us and we had more blocked shots than them.
So you know, those are just looking at the advanced stats and obviously got to give a
huge shout out to Artie here tonight for securing his third career hat trick after a huge bounce
back for him.
A lot of question marks surrounding this start and this pick was Sheloff's after he had a
bad showing in the preseason where he put up like a 6-1-7 save percentage, but looked
good in tonight's game.
Didn't really have any high danger shots that he really had to save, but saved all the ones
he had to for a shutout, which is great and great to see Artie get back in form here and
really show out and show the Penguins fans that yeah, you know, he just had one bad game
and he's back and ready to go, which is awesome.
I'm really excited for this tandem of Miroslav and Sheloff's this year and Sheloff's starting
the year with a shutout is great for him and his confidence going forward, but let's just
dive into the game score here from HockeyStackCards as there's a lot of unsuspecting names at
the top of this list.
Obviously the top one being Phillip Hollander, who had three points in this contest, having
him over a 5.74 game score.
Hendrik Klopp here up there as well with a 5 game score.
Koivunen, a guy who we said needed to step up and he did, having a 3.95 game score.
That whole line looking amazing, we're going to talk about that a little later in this
video.
Ricardo Raquel having a great game as well as Sidney Crosby, Evgeny Malkin.
Only two players finished this game under game score, which was Dewar and Soderblom,
but on the defensive side, Sam Gerrard looked amazing.
Had some great passes in this game that led to goals, over a 4.32 game score for him.
Korczak as well, a guy who I said coming into this year we should keep an eye out for, had
an over 4 game score for this team.
All around great game for this Pittsburgh Penguins team and a really big line coming
out of nowhere and really showing Dan Muse that they need to keep these guys together
and stepping up in the absence of Rusty and Kindle.
This line looked unbelievable.
We're going to talk about it in just a bit, but first I do just want to dive into Nick
Robertson getting his first regular season goal as a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Great celebration as well, but it was a great kind of fake shot by LeTang there.
Hit the pass, Robertson directs it right over the pad, it was a great goal by Robertson.
This is a guy who I've been talking about a lot here going into this season, he didn't
really get that opportunity in Toronto to show them that he's a good goal scorer, but
in my mind I really do think he can be a 30 goal scorer in this league, he has a great
shot and we are seeing a lot from him tonight in this game.
The second goal of the game came from Billy Koivunen who had an amazing, amazing move
on Dan Valladares in the neck, kind of went forehand, backhand, forehand, back to the
backhand, slid it under the pad, aimed through the 5 hole of Valladares, it was a great breakaway
goal from him and like I said Sam Gerrard, this is why he was the highest rated defenseman
in this game, had a great pass to Koivunen on this play, which was great to see as well
and then Hendrix Lapierre got into the action, scoring the third goal of the game, or no
it wasn't, it was Evgeny Malkin, then it was Lapierre, but Lapierre sets up Malkin for
an amazing one timer classic Malkin goal that goes top corner, which was great to see, put
him up 3-0 at that point, like I said, then Hendrix Lapierre got his pretty much right
after that and let's just kind of dive into it because it kind of goes on from here, as
like I said, Lapierre gets it from Hollander and Carlisle there to score the 4th goal of
the game, then it goes, Hollander scores one down low before the period, just halfway through
the period, which was great to see, again Korczak and Gerrard getting involved on the
assist there, and then Nick Robertson scores shorthanded from Hollander, he kind of, a
weird goal right, like he kind of shoots it off the end boards, it comes back out, hits
Lederer in the skate and then goes back in the back of the net, but those count, and Nick
Robertson has his second of the game, which was great to see, and then Chinnikov scores
kind of in the dying embers of this contest to make it 7-0 for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and
like I said, it was a great game, a lot of great showings, I think the Crosby, Raquel,
Robertson line looked amazing, they had a lot of high danger chances in this one, but
definitely the line that we're talking about today is obviously the Lapierre, Hollander,
and Koivun in line that looked just amazing, this is what Penn's Inside Scoop had to say
on Twitter, this is the line of Hollander, Lapierre, and Koivun is absolutely buzzing, all
three members of the trio have found the back of the net and are just making things happen
in the offensive zone, and I definitely have to agree here with Penguins Inside Scoop,
whenever they kind of get on the, whenever they really got on the ice, you could really
notice them out there, they were causing havoc on the forecheck, causing havoc on the
backcheck, causing havoc offensively as well, they just had some great chemistry, and like
they said here, they were absolutely buzzing, they were just fighting each other in stride
and finding each other for perfect goal scoring opportunities, and they had like a lot of
high danger chances in this, I believe one point when I checked it was at 7, but they
probably had a lot more than that, but they looked great in this game, and definitely
a line going forward that we need to look out for, because this was kind of a line that
was kind of thrown together here when we got these injuries, but now you kind of have
something special here, as all three members, like we talked about, were the highest game
score in the entire Pittsburgh Penguins team in this game, which was great to see, so big
game for the Pittsburgh Penguins, big game for this line, big game for obviously Crosby,
I mean it was great to see him kind of take that hit, but get up, make a play happen,
and Robertson scores the first goal of the game, I thought that was great to see from
the captain, Sid the kid there, not really the kid anymore, 39 years old, but still looking
good out there on the ice, but yeah, it was a great game for the Penguins tonight, just
quickly to wrap things up here, just want to take a look at the expected goals percentage
for every player, we see here, Hendrix up here, finishing the game with 93.7, which
is unbelievable, Tommy Novak being the second on the team, which is basically just creating
goals and how many goals they expect this player to have, so we have a second on the
team in this contest, then it goes LeTang, Kuiven, Malkin, Girard, Crosby, and as you
see Igor Chinnikov on the bottom, is at almost a 70% expected goals percentage, there are
never games like where players have this high, this many players at that high of an expected
goals percentage, which over 50% especially, which is crazy and just speaks volumes about
how dominant this Penguins team was, and I know as Penguins fans, seeing the Philly
Stadium completely empty at the end of the game and booing their team off the ice is
great to see for Pittsburgh, because they just had a dominant showing, they're here,
they fooled everyone this year, and they're right here to stay and here to take that playoff
spot, so let me know what your guys' favorite moment from this game was down below in the
