The Key to Overcoming Procrastination

I want to share something with you today that a lot of people I work with struggle with,
and it's one of the key things that really depletes your energy, your time,
and it breaks trust with yourself when you do it. That habit is procrastination.
And so when you say you'll do something and then you end up not doing it or it takes more time
or you just keep putting it off longer and longer, you start to not believe in yourself over time.
You start to think that, you know, oh, I actually don't have the skills to accomplish this or
overcome this. And it starts to eat away at you. And so people that procrastinate long-term often
suffer from lower self-esteem. Also, some people procrastinate just because maybe they're scared
of that what comes after that. Like, if I do really well here and this was so hard for me,
what if I'm going to get bigger things that I have to do? And I don't know if I want to take that on
or I'm already so overwhelmed that I don't know if, you know, if I do well here,
if it's really going to be a payoff for me or if it'll just end up
costing me more. And so for some of those reasons, I think it's important to look at
to look at specifically what's underneath it because you might just need skills on how to
set boundaries if you think that it's going to really take over your life. Or you might need
skills around communication, around how to talk about your worries and what's coming up for you
with people. Or like, you know, you might need to work on not taking on so much. There's different
ways of working with it. Those are not the tools I want to provide, though. There's a tool that's
more powerful than that. And so when you are struggling with procrastination, I think one
of the main things is that you do break trust with yourself over time. And so the antidote
to procrastinating is not powering through, it's commitment. And I shared this with a client today,
but I experience breakdowns on, you know, or overwhelm on, you know, a couple times a week
where I'm starting a new business and I just think, I don't know if I can do this. I don't
know the next step here. I've never done this before. But I end up reconnecting with my commitment.
Like, I'm committed to this path. I am committed to my goals. And I know that it's the right thing
to do. I know that I can help people and people will benefit from what I'm offering. So I'm going
to keep powering through. And so you see there that like, there's the self-esteem piece, I have
to work on my self-talk there. But then I also have to make a commitment to myself. So I can power
through, but it's not based on like, oh, I'm just from the will of my heart. It's actually from
the higher commitment that I'm making to myself. And that's really the key.
It's the higher commitment that I'm making to myself.
And that is what fuels me to keep going forward. I hope that was helpful.
