Amy shares her strategies for overcoming laziness and unlocking personal potential, drawing from her experience as a Caltech graduate and valedictorian. She argues that laziness is a mental resistance rather than a lack of ability, and that the true danger is not hard work, but the lifelong regret of not trying.
You know what's worse than trying hard and failing?
Failing when you did not try hard enough,
and even worse when you are a smart person.
I am so tired of you not understanding
the immense potential inside of yourself
to literally achieve your dream grades,
dream achievements, and your A-plus life.
I've coached enough students and even adults
who are 10 years older than me
who tell me how they regret being lazy,
especially in school.
I regret everything.
And let's face it, it's not hard work that will kill you.
It's regret.
Hey team, it's Amy.
If you're lazy, you probably don't want to listen
to a laundry list of advice,
so I've narrowed down the top most effective tips
that were magic for me being able to become valedictorian
while maintaining eight hours of sleep.
These also helped me get a 4.0 GPA
in chemical engineering at Caltech
while playing varsity basketball.
To exit our lazy era most efficiently,
we must first understand
what really is being lazy.
Merriam-Webster says,
this is when you're disinclined to activity or exertion.
In other words,
you just don't feel like putting in effort
to achieve something.
So that task you're supposed to be doing right now
instead of watching this great YouTube video,
as part of yin yang,
the action you should be doing can't change much.
If you have to write an essay,
you can't change the task into writing a poem.
Thus, what we can leverage as part of this yin yang
is the mindset
because the resistance you feel is all in your head.
So the key is to make your exertion more attractive
through these four tips.
Stay to the end of this video
to find out the most important first step you should do.
Time to lock in.
Let's go.
Imagine you mess up,
laying on your bed, bumming around.
How many times do you talk down on yourself?
Ugh, I'm being so bad.
I'm so lazy.
I can't get up.
I suck.
Do you think it's going to accomplish anything
other than making yourself feel worse and even lazier?
Instead, what consistently worked for me
was to coach myself in a friendly way
by having a positive attitude.
Think glass half full.
Acknowledging the little wins you already had today.
Feel grateful that you even get to do this daunting task
and focus on what you'll gain from your effort
and not what you will lose.
Because often we're not really losing anything
when we do the task.
We're just losing slumping on the couch
and scrolling on our phone, I guess.
The mind is an incredibly powerful thing
and don't just take my word for it.
I attended an Apple event
where Yale professor Dr. Laurie Santos,
who is an expert on happiness,
revealed that to stop being lazy,
you have to acknowledge common humanity.
This means that instead of thinking
there's something wrong with you
and beating yourself up,
you admit that you are just being human,
same as everyone else.
This chakra deals with willpower
and is blocked by shame.
Feeling lazy or unmotivated
is something that every single person experiences,
even the most successful people in the world.
When you put yourself in the same category of humans
as those you admire,
you will realize that you can achieve amazing things too.
This will boost your confidence
and it will become easier to be inclined
to do the activity and put in effort.
Some of you comment how hopeless your situation feels,
but your way of thinking
is exactly why it's harder and harder.
You need to inject in yourself a little bit of hope.
That's why at the start of this video,
I said you need to get off your lazy butt
because you have too much potential to rot there.
If you don't like what's going on,
get off of your butts
and find somebody to take care of these problems.
I didn't say you have to stop being lazy
because you suck,
so you shouldn't talk to yourself like that either.
Aw man, I hope someone doesn't clip that one part.
You have to stop being lazy because you suck.
Having a habit of thinking glass half full
will take you so far in life
and not just combat laziness.
But to make this effective,
you have to take one important step first,
which will be revealed at the end of the video.
When I have to do chores like washing the dishes,
I will put on Sabrina Carpenter's short and sweet album
or BTS's top hits.
Replicating or incorporating something you enjoy
into the work will get you excited.
I use this in my own work and school all the time.
If I had to memorize stuff,
I turn it into a game using flashcard generators
and online quiz platforms
because as an athlete,
something I already enjoy is competitions and games.
And one of the coolest platforms
that can help you enjoy studying
from math to psychology to AP biology is Thea.
They literally have a matching game
so you can have fun memorizing.
This is my third time partnering with Thea
because they help you get the A in such an awesome way.
You can enter any of your classes.
I'm putting AP calc.
Thea makes studying more engaging with smart study
where AI adjusts the difficulty of the questions
based on your progress.
There are detailed answer explanations
and you can always go back to look at your past practice.
Like I said in my overrated study tips video,
an underrated tip is to do mock tests.
This is one of the best ways to guarantee a top grade
and prevent test anxiety.
Thea makes it so easy to generate a test,
customize to the amount of time you have
and your difficulty level.
Study tip, not all terms are created equal.
When you're studying terms,
make sure to distinguish between those
that simply have a definition versus big picture concepts
that connect with other terms.
You should spend more effort on the latter.
Thea uses AI to distinguish between definitional
versus concept-based information
so you can learn even more effectively
with smart study and test features.
I appreciate how much Thea cares about students.
They're constantly rolling out new updates
to improve your learning experience.
Just as I'm thankful for your feedback to me,
feel free to submit any user feedback you have
to Thea on the platform.
Now's the perfect time to try Thea
to get you fired up for studying
so try it with the link in my description.
Like I said in tip one about common humanity,
I also get really lazy
and I don't want to get up and do anything
but I have an arsenal of useful chains of thought.
This is where when I think through these chains
without fail, I get up
and I start doing what I'm supposed to do.
I think about how in high school
to help prepare me for math competitions,
my dad would take huge stacks of math problems
and during his work time
when he was supposed to be chilling and taking a break,
he would be solving those problems
so he can explain to me later that day.
The amount of care and effort
that he put into me and my success makes me feel like,
oh my gosh, I need to put in that same effort too.
My parents didn't do these
because it felt like a burden or a sacrifice.
They wanted to do it for my future and wellbeing.
Thinking through these makes me want to get up
and put in the work too.
A really common great chain of thought
that other people have talked about
is to remember that somewhere out there in the world
is someone with worse circumstances than you
working their butt off.
Even better, if you can connect this
with a concrete example,
I remember last year when I visited China,
Sean took me to get a massage
and this massage parlor was full of people who were blind
and this girl who was massaging me was my age
but she couldn't see
and she talked about having dreams to go to the US
but she could never make that possible
and she was chatting with the other masseuses
and they were talking about
how they couldn't afford a $2 bowl of ramen downstairs.
Yeah, I think that got a little darker than I intended
but you know, it helps.
You gotta work hard to do justice to those out there
who have less than you and who are still working hard
because if they can do it, you can too.
If you need more examples of amazing chains of thought
that will actually get you to stop scrolling specifically,
then you can check out this video.
And the three amazing chains of thought
discussed in this video will get you to stop being lazy.
I have stood at the bedside of maybe thousands of people
as they took their last breath.
What people say in their final moments is pretty important.
They don't mess around.
When people are dying in their last words,
nobody has ever said,
Pastor Rick, bring me my trophies.
I wanna look at them one more time.
Or even bring me my college graduation certificate.
I wanna look at it one more time.
When people are dying and they know their time is short,
what they want in the room is not things
or trophies or achievement.
What they want is the people they love.
Eventually, we all eventually figure out
that it's all about love.
It's all about relationships.
I just pray you'll figure it out a whole lot sooner.
Picture yourself on your dead bed, dead bed.
Picture yourself on your deathbed.
What matters?
What will you wish you could have done for your loved ones?
Would you wish you could have spent
more quality time with them?
Maybe that could have been achieved
had you only value your time.
Not only that, but if you realized that your time
is also time you could have allocated to be with them.
Will you wish you were more present and less distracted
and in your head about how hard life is?
That's why it's important to remember your why.
Your deepest driving force for doing something.
This is a constant desire, a fire burning inside of you.
No, straight A's is not deep enough.
Ranking top 10 is not important enough.
Winning that state championship is not a good enough reason.
What got me through?
People, family, love.
I want to be able to give back to my parents
who gave so much to me.
I also want to be able to provide for my future family.
I want to set myself up so I can spend tons of quality time
with my future kids and watch them grow up
and go through each of their life milestones
and support their great life in any way I can.
I also want to be part of a movement
of helping this younger generation
make a better world for you and for me.
Where we have the right values.
So you being here, thank you so much.
You are part of this movement too.
I want bright-eyed students all around the world
to realize that they can make their life
really what they want.
That's what gets me to wake myself up at 4 a.m
to finish a video when there's no one telling me to.
No one is out there giving me a deadline or a consequence.
It's just me and my fire.
When you use any of tip 1, 3, or 4,
you will automatically be making the task more enjoyable
even if the action itself didn't change at all.
That's because the dread is all in your head.
That was good.
Kind of.
I have too low of a bar for myself.
That's the importance of the right mindset
as part of the yin-yang equation.
Mindset and action are like yin-yang
where an increase in one will boost the other.
Having a good mindset will make the right action easier
and the right action will make an even better mindset.
This is a positive feedback loop
but you have to kick off the positive feedback loop
from somewhere, either the mindset or the action.
However, laziness is in your head
so focus on the mindset, not the action
because when you're lazy, your action is non-existent.
Okay, good job.
Pat on the back.
If those earlier things were too deep for you,
I'll end on a couple of quick hacks
that don't require as much immediate thought.
If all else fails, twist your laziness to work for you
and be too lazy to be stressed.
If you're lying on the couch, tell yourself
time will pass anyway.
I'm older today than I was yesterday
so I might as well be further today than I was yesterday.
Okay, here we go.
Finally, the important step to take first
when you are lazy.
Take a beat.
When you're lazy, literally don't do anything
and stop for a moment to think and reorient your brain.
Put the screen down and stare at the ceiling even.
If you're still non-stop mindless scrolling,
that inertia is gonna make it nearly impossible
for any of those tips to work
because how can you rewire your brain if it's lost?
Yay, I didn't name which mindset today
was the golden mindset.
So I'd like you to choose which mindset
is your golden mindset that you will focus on honing first.
Let me know your favorite mindset in the comments
along with a sparkle emoji.
Remember to try learning efficiently with Thea
with the link in my description.
I love you all so much.
Note that I can't see you at the top
if you don't keep climbing.
You got this, okay?
Peace.
T minus five minutes, four minutes now.
Should I attack my email, Sean?
I've been having a pit in my stomach
for like the past three minutes.
I see it.
Update, update.
Status, update.
Uh-oh, uh-oh.
I'm gonna click view update.
