St. Louis Blues are back playing hockey today as the training camp of course is a lot shorter and
we see the St. Louis Blues among with a lot of rising stars and veterans taking on the disgusting
Dallas stars but Darius there's a lot to look at with this the St. Louis Blues came out with the
lineups and the game day players that will be playing within this organization and I kind of
want your thoughts on this of course a short of preseason there's going to be not a lot of time
for young players like Justin Carboneau and others to really impress management to get a permanent
spot within the team but what is your thoughts on this team as a whole and what did you think
is going to be the biggest storyline around these young guys making that push the disgusting
Dallas stars does kind of roll off the tongue quite nicely but that is who the Blues are taking
on tonight and a huge opportunity for a few players in particular obviously this is not the big guns
we kind of already know what the lineup is going to look like but we're getting a look at some guys
who I think will make the team in obviously Torbchenko and Suter and basically that first
line tonight is what I think the Blues fourth line may end up being on you know night one of
the season but some really big opportunities here for a guy like Justin Carboneau, Zach Dean,
Kaskamaki for example and these guys you know are going to be pro this year of Carboneau I should
say a lot of these younger guys are going to be turning pro this year and you know could see time
in the NHL if there are injuries but a really big opportunity here tonight specifically for Justin
Carboneau to show you know please put me into your lineup please move me up a little bit give me
a look and just try me in the lineup you know before the season starts because this could be
truly with how short camp is this year his only opportunity but not only that you know Finley came
over off of waivers last season as well from the Tampa Bay Lightning we covered that at the time
he had a good showing to end the year as well this is a big showing for him in this game too
and not even those guys that I mentioned Kaskamaki is a huge storyline heading into tonight too
because if you look at you know what they're running in terms of the power play if they do
get a power play opportunity tonight on paper again I'm not exactly sure what the lines are
for the Dallas Stars are tonight there could be a mix of you know a lot of different things like
most teams at this point but this could be pretty lethal and I want to see what Theo
Lindstein can do too because we've been talking about him at nauseam the last couple of days as
well Mark I know you have some thoughts on Theo Lindstein because he's looked really good got some
high praise from head coach Jim Montgomery over the last two days saying that he might be their
best defenseman and moving the puck and just positionally which would put you in a spot where
you might just be the best defenseman on the team but you know what are your thoughts on Theo
Lindstein as well because this is a massive opportunity for not just the guys that I've
pointed out but Theo Lindstein too to continue to keep his stock high because it looks like he is
not even not only going to make the team but make the team as a second pairing defenseman and I
think with this game alone of course looking at the defensive tour Tucker is there and Lindstein
there the rest of them incredible defensemen will probably will spend the year in the juniors or in
the AHL with Steve on but I think this is a good opportunity for them to kind of look at Lindsay
and say hey what can you do as that top defenseman here of course looking at the parents playing
second pairing with Ralph but again looking at the power play if Jim Montgomery sold on this guy
being the best puck mover the best defenseman getting the tape-to-tape passes this is a great
opportunity to say hey show me some success show me what you can do with suit or show me what you
can do with offensive threats like Justin Carbono Dean and of course Casper Mackey this is a great
opportunity for a young kid to get into this game and I know a lot of people might look and say hey
he's not playing with the Top Guns he's not playing with Colton Franco but not yet this is a
where it's a shorter preseason and maybe this is Jim Montgomery looking and saying hey he's not
going to get into five or six games because we have a short forced game preseason this is where
we're going to get him into game one he doesn't look at a place we'll get him into game two and
if he's in there by game three or four I almost feel especially with the quotes coming out again
we're going to fall back on this all offseason long looking at that he has the best puck moving
defenseman he's open when someone's open boom it's tape to tape people don't talk about this
often when you look at veteran coaches speaking about young guys this is incredible but there is
back to speaking on the team there's so many guys and a lot of guys looking to make that opportunity
like you said Casper Mackey had some stints in the NHL Justin Carbono is going pro regardless
in the AHL or the NHL but I think it's going to get interesting when we're now looking at Jordan
Binnington getting the first half of this game and then rotating goalies into the third what is
your thoughts on this because I do genuinely think out of outside defensemen and forwards
this is a guy looking to prove a point the most because Joel Hofer's at the heels if not Jordan
Binnington's at the heels to take over that starting spot I think you're right he has something
to prove so I definitely agree with you there also quick note if you're looking at the lineup before
one guy we didn't even mention Stenberg but I feel like with a lot of the moves that they made
this offseason Stenberg as much as we love him here on the channel probably going to start the
year in the AHL just because of his contract and it's just easier to not have to go through waivers
and all that crazy stuff you know at least to start the year so unfortunate but you know it
may be better for his development at this point and just easier for the team and that is what it
is but like you mentioned with a goaltending battle to me like you said he wants to come in
and prove something hey I can still be a starter he is is not it's going to be Joel Hofer's net
quite simply to me it is Joel Hofer's net to start this year there's nothing that Jordan
Binnington can do in this preseason in my eyes and listen I'm not the coach I don't work for
the organization I'm not Alex Steen all that stuff but there is nothing that Jordan Binnington can do
in this preseason in this small stint that would make me change my mind as to who the starting
goaltender for the Blues is this year and it's Joel Hofer he showed it two years ago that he was
you know really good coming up and you know had some decent numbers and was starting to build some
confidence and last year great numbers uh looked really good towards the end of the year and he was
easily the best of the two goaltenders so yes thank you for the Stanley Cup Jordan Binnington
and thank you for some pretty solid goaltending along the way the last couple of years but I think
ultimately the way that this finishes and this might actually come as a shock to some Blues fans
I think the way this finishes is Joel Hofer takes over the net this year as the starter and at some
point leading to the trade deadline Jordan Binnington will be traded I don't think he's
going to finish this contract here because I don't know if he's going to renew his contract here and
I don't think the Blues want to lose him for nothing so that might come as a hot take for
some people but I don't know if there's anything listen they're going to use him as a backup goalie
he's going to get games this year that's for sure but I don't think there's anything at this point
that uh leads me to believe that Joel Hofer will not be the starting goaltender of this team he
will be and Binnington will be his backup and I think they'll look to move him before the deadline
I think a big thing with the Binnington is if you're looking at Binnington say he comes out
red hot of the gate you have two goaltenders that are firing off above a 9-10 save percentage two
guys that are looking like brick walls I could see a world where they get to deadline and of
course if Binnington says hey I'm not going to come back maybe they look at that and say the
can't get traded right now because the value is not there maybe this is your in-house rental a
guy that wants to last your rob maybe you win a Stanley Cup with Binnington again and he says hey
screw it I don't actually want to leave this is going to get very interesting because there's a
lot of battles forward position young guys pushing through but I think one that's going to be talked
about quite a bit this preseason especially coming off the outcomes of these next couple games is
who's the starting goaltender moving forward and I'd like to agree with you Darius that I do think
Joel Hofer not only because of the age and of course Binnington's a legend he's going to be in
the rafters but this is the time where you start to lean into that youth movement and maybe this is
where Joel Hofer comes out as a top 10 goalie the future Hall of Famer of course but let us know
your thoughts down in the comments first off how excited are you that Blues hockey is back on
because it was a long winter or I should say summer because I felt like forever let us know
your thoughts down in the comments I've been your host Mark with my co-host Darius and take care
