How Loud are Hella Supertones VS Stock Horns
Hold on, I see that.
Oh my, it's actually warm.
It is the same temperature out here as it was in there.
Spring is finally here. I can't tell you how happy I am.
Oh my god, it's so beautiful out.
And today we're working on cars.
We're actually working on this beast today.
It is literally colder in my garage than it is out here.
Oh my gosh.
So as you guys can see, I picked up some gold hella horns for my Subie.
Why gold? Because gold Subie emblems.
Gold flake in the paint, although it's so dirty you can't really tell.
And gold wheels.
The gold's pretty close. It's a little darker, but it's pretty good.
So, yeah, cool.
Why get hella horns for your car?
I don't really expect you guys to understand. It's a Subaru thing.
If you own a Subaru, you have to get hella horns at least once.
And they have to match.
Yikes. Sounds like we have a little dog battle going on outside.
So these are just aftermarket horns that look cool and are louder.
The question is, how much louder?
And that is what we're going to be testing today.
How much louder are hella horns compared to stock horns?
And for that, we have this.
This lovely app is a decibel reader.
It will tell us how loud the horn is.
I don't really know how accurate it is, but it will at least tell us which one is louder.
So, go ahead and click play here.
And go honk the horn.
Wow, that is loud.
The stock horn was 87 decibels.
That's the max right there.
That's pretty good.
Let's see how loud it is from here.
That peaked at 82 decibels.
So, still pretty loud all the way from over here even.
The thing next, we're going to put it in the car.
See how loud it is from inside the car when the car is right behind it.
So if I'm behind this stupid driver right here in this Miata and I'm honking the horn,
how loud is it?
So, it was 77 decibels in the car, which is a little bit quieter than normal talking or loud talking.
So, it's kind of quiet when you're inside the car.
Now, let's see how loud it is when I'm driving by.
It maxed out at 83 decibels, although I don't know if that was my exhaust, cars passing by, or my horn.
So, okay.
So, we found out how loud the stock horns are.
Pretty good, not too bad.
I'm guessing these hella horns will be a couple decibels louder, but not too much.
Once you get higher and higher into the decibel range, it needs to be louder and louder to get more decibels, if that makes sense.
I got to say, when the weather is this nice out, my gas mileage goes down significantly.
So, I can have my windows open and I can actually hear my car and it sounds so good.
So, I just romp it everywhere, but that's okay.
Now, it is time to go ahead and install the hella horns.
These aren't too hard.
They bolt in, plug them in, and you're all good.
As you can see, I already took the grill out.
The stock horn is right here.
Just go ahead and unplug it.
Horns are on.
We might have to do some adjusting as to how high or how low we want them to be, but that looks pretty good.
Let's go ahead and wire them up.
So, everything is put back together.
The horns are in.
I'm pretty sure they work.
They're back there, but they're not super noticeable.
Matches with the gold.
So, it's nice.
It looks good.
Let's go ahead and test them and see if they work.
Oh, my gosh.
Holy ----.
That is loud.
So, they work.
My wiring job was just fine.
Let's see how loud they are.
All right.
Here we go.
Right there.
What the ****?
Ah, ----.
That definitely just cracked my screen.
I'm going to try it again, except I'm going to put it down here.
The max right there is 84 decibels.
That was actually 3 decibels quieter than the normal horn.
Wow.
Huh.
Max was 81.
That was still 1 decibel quieter than the stock horn.
What the ****?
Go ahead and put it in the car.
See if there's any difference.
As you saw there, that was 78 decibels before I started talking.
That was actually 1 decibel louder.
Oh, I just dropped it again.
Jesus.
That was actually 1 decibel louder than the stock horn.
So, I think I know what's going on.
In pure volume, the hella horns are definitely quieter, but they sound louder.
That's a different tone.
It's more piercing.
So, inside the car, a little bit farther away, they were a little bit louder than the stock horn,
or closer to the volume of the stock horn.
I have to admit that's still a little disappointing.
I mean, we've got two aftermarket horns versus one stock horn,
and it's still louder when you're right there.
But they definitely do sound louder, and they definitely do hurt more.
I'm also going to go ahead and replace the shift boot.
Huh.
Boom.
Just like, wow, look at that shifter linkage.
It is so weird looking.
Shift boot's a little bit too long, as you can see.
I guess I didn't install it quite right, so I'll just kind of tug it down there.
Actually, no, it's really not that bad.
Looks nice.
It's a little much for an all-black interior, but maybe it won't be an all-black interior for long.
I will admit it was a pain to install that, but we did get it in.
Let's go scare some people with horns.
Beep, beep.
My car was making noises, so can you pop the hood real quick?
Yeah.
Beep.
Got them.
Kind of.
It wasn't that great, but.
Oh, yeah, I like that.
They kind of blend in, too.
You want to open the hood?
Got them.
That's not small.
It looks pretty big.
No, it's pretty small.
It's tiny.
Oh.
Not sure how I feel about this shift boot.
Hmm.
Kind of looks like I got a clown penis.
But, guys, that is going to be it for today.
Hello Horns are installed, and they're not hella loud.
Car's also cleaned, and damn, does this thing look good.
I love being part of the wagon life.
Like, oh, it's gorgeous.
I love it.
I can't get over this car.
However, it definitely needs more low now that it's summer, because not about that life.
It is a little weird, because the horns actually aren't as loud as the stock horns.
They sound louder, they feel louder, but they're not.
And pure volume-wise, they are definitely not.
So hopefully that taught you something.
If you're looking for, like, 110 decibel horns, these are not the ones.
Although they do sound loud.
It's so weird.
Like, I swear to God they're louder, but I don't know.
Maybe that app's just complete bullshit.
That's also very possible.
I don't know.
Let me know in the comments.
I like the way they look, because they look good, but they're not super noticeable.
They don't stick out like a sore thumb.
It's also now triple turbo.
There's one in the hood, and the two turbos right there.
So it's making about, like, 600 wheel now.
So that's pretty cool.
That's the real reason why I bought those.
But guys, that is going to be it for today.
Hopefully you did enjoy.
If you did, please make sure to like and subscribe if you are new.
Words cannot explain how much I appreciate all the support I've been getting lately.
Like, it's blowing my mind.
It's crazy.
You guys love the Real Miata.
So, with that being said, we're going to be working on that tomorrow.
The bash bars for it still aren't here, even though they supposedly shipped Monday.
I don't think they did.
I think the company is bullshitting me again, just like the wheels, but whatever.
But yeah, guys, I'll see you tomorrow.
Have a good weekend, and peace out.
