But yes, with that said, last night if you missed the stream we lost 6-2 to the Anaheim
Ducks but there were some bright spots in this game.
We got to see Sam Dickinson on the Powerplay 2 unit.
I got to see him get involved offensively as well.
Had a little bit of a blunder at one point as well allowing a goal for the Anaheim Ducks
but we'll let it slide and Eric Polkamp really had a great standout game scoring the opening
goal of the game coming in, pinching in, coming down the middle of the ice, finding
the back of the net and then it was Brett Leeson who I figured was the player of the
game.
The guys in the chat last night in the live stream had Polkamp as their player of the
game but it was a great game all around.
Good to see Sharks hockey back but we did get some comments from Ryan Warsawski about
this game so let's dive into it and talk about everything he had to say.
The first quote he had to talk about was about Polkamp.
He said I liked a lot of things that he did.
Just moved pucks, let the game come to him, if there was an opportunity to get up the
ice he did it.
He wasn't trying to do too much things that we've talked about, he used his legs to get
out of trouble.
There's a lot of work to do.
Basically saying yeah, he had a great game, he still has a lot of work to do but Polkamp
did have a solid game for the Sharks last night.
I mentioned a lot of people thought he was probably the player of the game for the Sharks
last night.
Had a great scoring chance, scored that goal to open the game.
Also had a lot of great scoring chances on the power play as well.
Really proven to be that big shot defenseman that we all talked about him for all last
season when we've been waiting to see him on the ice in a Sharks jersey.
He did not disappoint last night on the power play, one of the power plays that the Sharks
did have.
He let three big slap shots go creating a lot of rebound opportunities for the players
down low and I really liked what I've seen out of him last night.
I think he was sound defensively in his own zone, wasn't afraid to rip a big outlet pass.
We've seen some good outlet passes from him last night in last night's game and I thought
he looked solid.
I thought he looked like a solid defenseman for this team against a Anaheim Ducks team
that was very overpowering compared to the lineup we had on the ice.
I think Polkamp really stood his ground and was able to escape the danger areas and create
some playmaking for this team.
Zone exits as well but the big point for Polkamp last night was his goal and those big slap
shot opportunities that he did have on the power play.
But that's not who only Ryan Wrosowski had to talk about today.
He talked about Nolan Allen as well.
He said did some good things, poised some things we can clean up but step in the right
direction.
Had a slow start to camp, starting to pick up a little bit.
The pace is going to pick up.
You're going to get a lot of information thrown at you.
There's a lot going on in our meetings and practices.
You really got to be mentally focused and ready to execute and on top of it do things
that you're good to stick out.
And I think that's what Nolan Allen did last night.
He played his game for sure.
Being that big defenseman, I really did think what we see from Nolan Allen last night, yeah
he might have created some turnovers along the boards trying to get the passes out of
the zone when they were hemmed in by this Ducks offense but he did have a good showing
last night.
I think he showed his physicality was his number one thing that stood out to me.
I finished all of his checks.
He was using his frame and his size and his muscle to try to out muscle his opponent to
get them off the puck and that's one thing that I really did like out of Nolan Allen
last night was being that hard nosed defensive defenseman.
At times yes he might have blundered with a few passes, made a few mistakes but he looked
good and he looked better than the last time we've seen him and I think this guy is going
to be solid for the Barracuda this year and hopefully he's a guy maybe we can see in the
Sharks at some point if injuries do arise but I thought he looked solid last night.
A couple of plays like I said that he did, maybe a few turnovers that he did cause but
that physicality was very noticeable last night as well but let's move on to another
quote that we did see from him about Sam Dickinson.
He kept it short.
He said did some good things.
Did some things that we still got to work on and you know basically saying hey yeah
Dickinson played a good game.
He did some good things but there was also some things that he you know he struggled
with in this game and I think a lot of fans would have to agree with was that Jackson
Lacombe goal where Carter Gauthier kind of spun off him to find Lacombe open for that
goal and it was a defensive lapse from Sam Dickinson but not something that he can't
come back from.
He's still learning, still a young player in this league, still a young defenseman trying
to find his footing and I think when we seen him in the offensive areas of the ice last
night he really did excel.
We've seen some great passes from him.
He was kind of the quarterback of this offense last night playing top pairing minutes and
you know I really think what we've seen out of him last night was solid.
You know we've seen him have some great outlet passes to his teammates.
When he was in the zone he had a couple nice shots.
He was stepping in for wristers trying to you know be that Sam Dickinson we all know
he can be and I think we've seen flashes of that last night.
He just needs to put it all together.
I think we need Sam Dickinson to become the complete package for us.
Right now I think maybe he's about 75% of that but I think Sam Dickinson is a very talented
defenseman and we're very lucky to have him on our team and you know after this first
preseason game yeah you know you can come away with some negatives but you can also
come away with some positives.
He got some time on the power play two unit, looked really good there quarterbacking that
power play and something going into this season we were hoping to see was him quarterbacking
one of these power play units.
I definitely think we will see that.
So hopefully we can see him continue to work on his game here in this preseason and come
out of the gates for the regular season firing on all cylinders.
But there is one more player that Warsawski did talk about last night and that was LSW
Leo Salin-Walnus and this is what he had to say about him.
You can definitely see the ability to play with some poise, make plays.
He's a smart individual.
He saw a high placed hockey game and a good experience for him to go through it.
You see the tools and that was definitely something I was thinking last night was when
I was watching the game on the live stream I was like yeah this guy was really noticeable
whenever he was on the ice he was taking the puck behind the net finding his teammates
without let passes.
I thought he had a very solid game for the Sharks team and solid game offensively as
well.
I thought that whenever he had the puck in the offensive zone he was creating something
getting working it down low you know trying to make something happen.
I think a couple times maybe when the Sharks were hemmed in their own zones he had a lot
of long shifts last night is what I noticed and when he got you know at the end of those
shifts and his stamina was depleted you know he made some careless plays but I think this
is something that he can learn from as well.
Having these long shifts that creates that experience to say okay you know when I'm tired
I can't just be trying to huck the puck out of the zone to get the change but what I see
from last night I did really like.
I think he's a guy who he does have like Ryan Wrosowski said all the tools to be an
everyday defenseman in this league and we did see flash of that last night.
I just don't want to you know be the negative but that was things we did see but we did
see a lot of positives from him too.
I think his passing his IQ was on show last night trying to create some you know some
zone entries for his teammates.
He was creating a lot of plays you know from being a puck moving type of guy last night
and I liked what I've seen out of LSW last night but like I said it was a lot of talk
about the defenseman from Ryan Wrosowski last night and I think you know it was obviously
on defense allowing six goals I mean it was on the goaltenders as well so I think that's
why he touched on it but I thought the defense was solid last night.
You know there was an instance where you know Hayek or Hayek was playing on that third pairing
caused a penalty when the game was tied 2-2 and then it got out of hand from there was
kind of a turning point for the Anaheim Ducks but it was a solid first preseason game and
we're going into our next preseason game now tomorrow night against the Vegas Gold Knights
and it'll be at home so it will be our first game where we get to see Ivar Stenberg and
we'll get to see you know more of a full lineup from this San Jose Sharks team.
Celebrating the mix as well and this will be a fun game to watch and I'm hoping for
you guys we'll get in our live stream going so if you guys are interested in getting in
