Mikhail Glinka (1804–1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country and is often regarded as the founding father of Russian classical music.

The Three Russian Songs are based on vocal works (Romances or Lieder) that Glinka wrote between 1825 and 1840. They were arranged for piano trio by Eduard Herrmann.

The Trio “Pathétique” was composed in 1832, while Glinka was studying at the Milan Conservatoire. It was premiered in 1833 at the Teatro alla Scala by a trio consisting of Pietro Tassistro (clarinet), Antonio Cantù (bassoon), and the composer himself at the piano.
