Originally composed for piano and orchestra, the ‘Grande polonaise brillante’ was written in 1831. The ‘Andante spianato’ was written in 1834 and added to the start of the piece. The ‘Grande polonaise’ was then arranged as a piano quartet and finally as the solo piano work known today.
