Oh god, here I am again.
Welcome back!
Who are you? Are you depressed too?
No, I'm actually THE Void.
I missed you last time.
There were a lot of people here in 2020.
I was making the rounds.
Wait, so the Void is a British man?
There is nothing we can't colonize.
Space, time, and emotional state.
Okay, well, I wouldn't have guessed that,
but the universe is a billiards game of balls
made up of gas and rocks, so, okay, tracks.
Oh, according to my guest book, you're a regular.
What's brought you back?
Grief? Existentialism?
A sad cat video?
Thank you for yelling into the abyss.
Your call is very important to us.
Please hold!
Sorry about that.
I'm very popular lately.
Anyway, back to you.
Well, I don't know why I'm here.
I just feel, I feel empty and disconnected and hopeless.
In my experience as the Void,
depression doesn't have a cure.
You can only manage it with lifestyle choices,
healthy mindsets, connection, and yes,
sometimes interventions like medication are necessary.
Everyone's a little bit different, honestly.
Some people find tremendous help in gratitude journals,
others in exercising.
Some can't make progress without a therapist
to help them unlearn cognitive distortions.
Okay, but I do all of that.
I exercise and I eat healthy and I journal, journal, journal.
I do all the things and I'm still here.
I don't get it.
Okay, I'm doing everything right.
Hey, hey, okay.
You don't have to beat yourself up for being here.
Oh my God.
Oh, don't worry about that.
People look into me all the time.
Sometimes they come in, sometimes they don't.
Hello.
Oh my God, what is the point?
What is the point of anything?
Listen, what I tell everyone in here is that it's temporary.
All are welcome, but not forever.
This is my house.
You can crash on my couch, but there's a limit.
And like crashing on a friend's couch,
accept you're here, be my friend,
and work on getting the fuck out of my house.
Just a little bit every day.
What do you say?
Being in here doesn't have to be so bad.
Oh shit, I forgot I had them on hold.
Be right with you.
Thank you so much to Tim
for being a part of the episodes today.
And for those of you guys who didn't know, fun fact,
Tim has actually edited like hundreds of episodes.
It was truly a joy and helped me stay on my feet
sort of out here in LA.
And I know that around the time
that I had to stop editing for you
to go work on the film that I told you that,
you know, working for you, working for this channel,
sort of putting out mental health awareness content
and all that stuff.
Like, you know, I think you put something
really good out of yourself.
Aw, thank you.
Tim is not just an editor, he's also a director.
He did the Fabletics commercial, Check Out My Butt.
Some would say my finest work.
No, I would say your finest work
is your first feature, Me, Myself, and the Void.
Like, I got to read the script and I've seen the film,
and I think it's such an amazing piece
that looks at men's mental health issues,
which I don't think we talk about enough,
particularly like the struggle with vulnerability
and accountability and asking for help.
Yes, the movie, it tells the story of a struggling standup
who finds himself trapped in, you guessed it,
a mysterious void.
His earthly body is lying face-flat on his bathroom floor,
and he has to figure out how he got there
and whether he can wake himself up.
I got to work with Chris and Jack,
who are sketch comedians here on YouTube,
Akilah Hughes and Kelly Marie Tran,
and it's available to stream right now.
It would really mean a lot if you check it out.
Yeah, I'm gonna put it in the description below.
Make sure to click on the link
and watch Me, Myself, and the Void.
It's an amazing feature,
and I can't wait to see what you do next.
Yay!
I'm Anna Akana.
Thank you to BetterHelp for sponsoring today's video.
I can't emphasize therapy's benefits enough.
With BetterHelp, you can have your therapy sessions
as a phone call, a video chat, or even messaging,
whatever's most comfortable for you.
BetterHelp can match you to one of over 30,000 therapists
in their network based on your needs,
your preferences, and location,
which can give you access to a wider range of expertise
than may be locally available.
Now, to get started,
all you do is you fill out a questionnaire
that will ask you questions
like what challenges you're going through,
what kind of therapists you would like,
and then BetterHelp matches you
with a therapist who can help.
In most cases, you'll be matched within 48 hours.
And look, I do feel like therapy is like dating,
so there are times when you could feel
like your therapist is just not a great fit.
So if you feel that way, for whatever reason,
you can switch at no additional cost.
It's most important that you have a therapist
whose advice and whose help really resonates with you.
