The second part of lesson 4 is focusing on directions,
and today we'll go through several common directions we see in daily life,
as well as examples in conversation.
So starting with the directions we see,
first is 前, which means front in directions,
but this character 前 can also mean previous or past.
For example, 前天 means day before yesterday.
Correspondingly, 后 in directions means back, like opposite of front.
But 后 itself can also imply the future,
like 后天 would be day after tomorrow.
Another direction we see very often is left.
However, in Chinese, 左 can also mean not very smart.
Opposite of 左 in directions is right, which we call 右.
Again, in Chinese, 右 this one character can have multiple meanings,
including orthodox or conservative.
So even in politics, it is the same meaning as right in English.
Another character we've seen before, but here in directions,
上 means up or before.
Now, what we've seen before was 上午.
And while it refers to time before noon and after breakfast,
in English, it is still morning.
And the direction, 上 meaning up.
Opposite of 上 is down, which is 下 in Chinese.
So again, we've seen 下午 before.
And corresponding to 上午 meaning morning,
下午 is afternoon.
And now starting with our brief conversation, we're starting with a question.
First phrase here, 不好意思 actually means excuse me,
and you can use it in the same way as the English excuse me.
Second part of this phrase is a question.
First two characters in this part, 请问 is a polite way to start any question.
请 means please, and 洗手间 means washroom,
since 洗手 is wash hand and 间 in first room.
So 洗手间 is washroom, and 怎么 is how.
Last character 走 means walk, but together,
洗手间怎么走 literally means how can one walk to get to the washroom.
So this whole phrase, 请问洗手间怎么走 means where is the washroom please.
Here is the first part of our reply.
先 means first or before, so here it means first, logically.
And then 向 means toward.
走 means walk, and from numbers, 100 means 100.
Well for 你, it normally refers to rise, but when it's implying for units, it means meter.
So 先向右走一百米 means first go right for 100 meters.
Second part of our reply is 再向左行约两百米.
再 means next or again, 向左 means toward left,
行 is actually similar to 走 which means walk or go, and 约 means approximately.
So next, go toward the left for approximately 200 meters, or for about 200 meters.
再向左行约两百米 And then the last part of our answer,
就到了. 就 here means then, in the sense that it's finally accomplishing something.
到 is arrive or reach, so 就到了 means then you're there,
then you've arrived at the destination, or then you've arrived, and that's it.
就到了。 Thanks for watching!
