A little add-on to the previous video in lesson 3. 家人 jiā rén 太太 tài tài means wife and 先生 xiān shēn means husband. But 先生 xiān shēn can also have multiple meanings including gentleman or teacher. 伯母 bǒ mǔ meaning aunt only refers to the wife of one's father's elder brother. 伯母 bǒ mǔ 叔母 shū mǔ also meaning aunt refers to the wife of one's father's younger brother. 叔母 shū mǔ 姑父 gū fù meaning uncle refers to the husband of father's sister. 姑父 gū fù Since mother's brother is called 舅舅 jiù jiù 舅母 jiù mǔ meaning aunt is the wife of 舅舅 jiù jiù 舅母 jiù mǔ Again, as 姨母 yí mǔ means mother's sister 姨父 yí fù meaning uncle is her husband. 姨父 yí fù For cousins, because of the one-child policy in China over the last few decades we don't really have lots of siblings in our generation so we would just call them as one would address our own siblings 哥哥 gē gě elder brother 姐姐 jiě jiě elder sister 弟弟 dì dǐ younger brother and 妹妹 mèi mèi younger sister. Though if you are interested in more precise terms please continue watching this as we will move on to that shortly. So when both of your fathers are siblings we would add 堂 táng in front of the sibling term. So to address cousins on one's dad's side we could say 堂兄 táng xiōng for elder male cousin 堂姐 táng jiě elder female cousin 堂弟 táng dì younger male cousin and 堂妹 táng mèi younger female cousin all on our father's side. But when all of your mother is sibling to other person's mother or father we add 表 biǎo in front of the sibling term instead of 堂 táng. So 表哥 biǎo gē elder male cousin 表姐 biǎo jiě elder female cousin 表弟 biǎo dì younger male cousin and 表妹 biǎo mèi younger female cousin. And now quick practice with one sentence. When I say 我有一个哥哥 wǒ yǒu yīgè gēgè 我 wǒ means I 有 yǒu means have 一个 yígè means one 哥哥 gēgè elder brother Could you guess if I have a sibling or a cousin?
