In lesson 3, we started with a bit of review for the first two lessons, which is called 复习 review. In lesson 1, we saw that when greeting one other person, we could always use 你好 because 你好 means hello. While the first character 你 means you and the second character 好 means good, these two combined always means hello. However, when we are addressing a group of people, we would normally say 大家好. 大 the first character means big and the second character 家 means family or home, while 大家 refers to everyone, everyone in the room or everyone in the group you are addressing. Hello everyone, in Chinese, it would be 大家好. Another term one can always hear is 早上好. 早上 means morning and 好 means good, so good morning is 早上好. Here we can see that 上午好 also means good morning. First character 上 means up or before, while second character 午 means noon. So before noon in English is still morning and in French is avant-midi, and this basically refers to time before noon and after breakfast, which we call 上午. So good morning can also mean 上午好. 下午好 good afternoon. 下 means below or after, while 午 still means noon. So 下午好 means good afternoon. And 晚上 means evening, so 晚上好 means good evening. So that was some review on greetings, and here we're going to look at a few 问答. First character 问 means ask or question, and second character 答 means answer. So 问答 is question and answer. 今天是周四。明天是周几? 今天 today 是 is 周四 Thursday 明天 tomorrow 周几? What day of the week? So the first half of the sentence 今天是周四, today is Thursday, and second half of the question 明天是周几? What day of the week will it be for tomorrow? 明天是周五。明天 tomorrow 是 is will be 周五 Friday 明天是周五
