The second part of lesson 3 was focused on learning 家人, family members in Chinese. As mentioned last time, 家 means family or home, and second character 人 means person or human. So together, 家人 means family member. Starting with ourselves, 我 means I or me, and 自己 means self. So 我自己 would mean myself. And similarly, since 你 means you, 你自己 would mean yourself. 爸爸 means dad, and 父亲 means father. 爸爸,父亲,妈妈 means mom, and 母亲 means mother. 妈妈,母亲. Now, 哥哥 and 兄长 both refer to your older brother, but the first term is more frequently used and the second one is a bit more formal. 哥哥,兄长. The term for younger brother is a little more simple. It's 弟弟,弟弟, younger brother, 弟弟. 妹妹 and 姐姐 both mean sister, but 妹妹 refers to younger sisters while 姐姐 refers to older ones. 妹妹,姐姐. And now we will look at some family members on the father's side. 爷爷 and 祖父 are both the father of your father, but 爷爷 means grandpa, and 祖父 means grandfather. 爷爷,祖父. For the mother of one's father, there are three terms to address him. 奶奶, which means grandma, 奶奶. And 祖母, which again means grandmother, 祖母. There is also 婆婆, which also means grandma, 婆婆. And this third term 婆婆 can also be used when addressing the mother of your husband. 姑姑, aunt, father's sister. 姑姑,伯伯. This term means uncle, but it only refers to one's father's elder brother or brothers. 伯伯,叔叔.
