Pack goats, difficult stream crossings, a brutal boulder basin, brook trout, and campfire cooking—this first-time mountain adventure pushed all of us close to our limits.
With no firsthand knowledge of the area, Maggie, Bill, Hector, Ricky, and I set out in my Toyota 4x4 to explore a group of lakes we had only seen on a map. The trail quickly turned into repeated stream crossings, steep boulder fields, and a long climb where I became concerned about the goats losing their balance with packs on.
To get everyone safely through the roughest terrain, I removed the goats’ packs and shuttled the gear ahead in several trips until we found camp. After reaching the third lake, I caught a brook trout and cooked it on the Firebox Octagon campfire stove using the new Octagon Fire Pan Tin. The Fire Pan Tin also became the base for a side-mounted reflector oven, where I baked cinnamon rolls after dinner.
The next morning brought coffee, bacon and eggs over a wood fire, followed by one of my best camp desserts yet: pineapple lemon upside-down cake with cream cheese frosting and fresh blueberries. When friends Jed and Ben arrived from the far lake, I used a little cake to convince them to help carry Bill’s gear back down—making the difficult descent much safer for the goats without Packs.
This was one of the most exhausting pack-goat trips I have taken. Every step through the boulder basin required thought, patience, and a safe route for the animals.
A hiker and his pack goats navigate grueling mountain terrain, including dense brush and boulder fields, to explore high-altitude lakes. The journey highlights the challenges of wilderness travel, the success of catching a wild trout, and the use of specialized titanium gear to prepare gourmet meals and desserts in a remote setting.
Come here, Maggie.
Oh, Bill.
Well, my pack is definitely the heaviest.
All right, let's go, boys.
The mountain kind of makes a horseshoe shape.
We're going up in there.
There's kind of a basin up there,
and there's about four lakes.
Our first challenge, and it's a pretty big one,
well, our first challenge was that road.
But our second challenge is going
to be crossing this river.
I'm actually hoping that they don't
try to follow me over this.
Let's see if we can get them to come down here
where it's more shallow.
Come on, Bill.
But it is fairly shallow right here.
I just don't know if they'll go for it.
I'm going to have to leave them a little bit.
Come on, Bill.
I have this long lead, luckily, in the truck.
And I have no choice but to pull them across.
It's not deep.
Maggie can walk across.
They won't like it, but they'll be OK.
Come on, Ricky.
Come on.
Just going to have to do them one at a time,
get them across.
There you go.
See, that wasn't so bad.
Come on, Bill.
There you go, see?
I know.
No, Maggie.
No.
Good boy, Hector.
Good boy.
This side isn't nearly as difficult
because it's not deep.
So I'm just going to go across, and I'm just
going to keep walking until they follow me.
Good girl, Maggie.
There is another river that we're going to have to cross.
So hopefully, it'll be shallow.
I really don't want to get my feet wet.
I'm going to keep walking up and see what else I can find.
Well, they finally made it.
Good grief.
You should have just gone through.
Why'd you have to make such a big fuss?
Good grief.
Yes, it's me.
You made it.
Good goats.
This is all bushwhacking.
And so far, it's very challenging.
It's very zigzag to get through this.
There's no straight line.
Little by little, so long as we never give up,
we have to make it.
I was hoping to avoid these rocks,
but I don't think I have any choice.
I'm going to have to go up them.
More rocks.
Well, we're kind of up on a bench.
We're on this massive rock, and it's pretty cool
because you can see how this piece of the rock
just broke off.
You can see how it would fit right in there.
Just a massive rock.
But the goats are doing great.
Definitely have a nice view from up here.
Oof, I'm getting tired.
This is the hardest bushwhacking I have ever done.
This is just horrible.
You just have to work for every single step.
It's like nothing comes easy.
I'm only about halfway through the bushwhack, I'm afraid,
if that.
We have been picking our way through this boulder field,
but we finally did make it to a little piece of flat ground.
It feels like this whole cirque, this whole little plateau
in the mountain, it feels like it's all boulders.
Like this is just this little island of soil, but most of it
is just this stuff behind me, boulders, huge boulders
the size of Volkswagens.
So I'm tired.
The goats are tired.
I ended up carrying the goat packs like the last little ways.
So it's going to be difficult to get back out of here,
and I might have to carry everything all the way out.
I just don't want it to be dangerous for the animals,
and I think the safest way is going
to be for them to not have a pack on their back.
The goats are clearly tired.
Isn't hard to see.
Phil's looking for a place to lay down.
He's picky, though.
He's going to have to make himself a bed.
Maggie already got comfortable, and Hector's kind of
falling asleep standing up.
That's kind of how I feel is how Hector looks.
We're just going without our packs
and trying to find the lake.
Maggie found some water.
Maybe we should have the goats come find it as well.
Looks like nice clear water.
There's some water right here, Belle.
Belle, come here.
You can lead a goat to water, but you can't make them drink.
Well, I'm running out of dirt.
I'm going to be back in boulders here in just a second.
We made it to the first lake.
I haven't seen any rises, any activity
that would make me think there were fish in here.
You going to jump in?
Jump in.
Go for a swim.
OK.
We are coming up on our second lake.
I'm really surprised we were actually
able to make it to a second lake.
But there's actually a pretty good patch of dirt
here in the middle of all this.
You can kind of see the lake there a little bit.
We made it to the water's edge.
We are definitely on the shallow side.
And the water kind of has a similar brown color.
It's not a blue lake.
It is pretty.
Look at that.
It's a beautiful scene.
All right.
I've made it to the third lake.
And it looks like it might be the shallowest of them all.
It's very beautiful as an island.
Wow.
Very beautiful.
But I don't know if there's any fish in it.
The goats sure like this mountain grass.
There's one more lake I'd like to look at.
But I'm afraid I don't have time to get to it.
It's a little harder to get to and a little further away.
And it's 4 o'clock now.
And I've got to hike back.
I'm just afraid I'm going to run out of time.
I really don't want to try to make it
through this difficult terrain in the dark
to try to get back to our gear.
I left all my gear back there where
I was planning on camping.
Well, I might throw a hook on and put my line out here.
I really don't have much faith.
I mean, I just haven't seen any movement
in the water, in the streams.
I haven't seen anything to give me an indication
that there is life in these lakes.
I think I hit the bottom.
I think it's really shallow.
Felt like a bite, but I'm hitting the bottom.
Oh, no, I got a fish.
Woo-hoo.
Oh, dang, it got off.
Well, there are fish in here.
Hallelujah.
Maybe there's fish in all these lakes.
Maybe those were all bites.
Well, now I want to catch a fish.
I'm surprised that got off.
Got another one.
Yeah, there's fish in here.
Pretty nice fish, too.
Let's see if I can net it.
Oh, man, that's a beautiful fish.
Use my water bottle.
Woo-hoo.
Wow.
Dang.
That's dinner.
Holy smokes.
It's actually a very decent fish.
It's definitely pan-sized,
so there's nowhere to put the camera,
so that's why I'm so close and you can't see my face.
I'm gonna clean this real quick,
and then I'm gonna head back to camp.
All right, Bill, you ready?
Let's start walking back.
Okay, Maggie, let's go.
We need to grab some water while we're out here, too.
I wanted to grab it out of this stream,
since it's flowing.
Looks much nicer.
I think Ricky got stuck.
I'm coming, Ricky.
Settle down.
I'm coming.
What happened?
Oh, you tried to step on the log,
and the log sank, and you got stuck.
Come here, buddy.
Come on, come on.
Keep coming, you gotta try.
You gotta help.
No, Maggie, be nice.
Okay, let's go.
Poor Ricky.
Bill doesn't care, huh, Bill?
You're just a mean old guy.
You're just a mean old goat.
You should be nicer to little Ricky.
Look at him, he's all wet.
I'll give you some steak later.
The good news is that fire restrictions have been lifted,
so I can build a fire,
and I have something new to show you guys.
Excuse me, Hector, I need some of these red pine needles.
Here you go, Maggie, come here.
This is what I have to show you.
Let me get it out here.
It's kinda back here against the back.
It's kinda big.
It's a big surprise.
This is a fire pan tin for the octagon.
So I've got the folding fire grate right there.
These are the long fire sticks.
This is the folded octagon,
and these are the short sticks.
So let's set these over here.
I'm gonna go ahead and open this up just like this.
Let's put the folding fire grate down in there.
Just like this.
Then we can put the short fire sticks across here,
just like that.
And then I like to do the longer fire sticks
in a kind of a V shape.
So let's see, something like that.
But let's go ahead and just move these out
a little further for a second while I get the fire started.
So the cool thing, let me just review this real quick.
So the cool thing about this is,
you can set it up all over to one side,
and then you can set up your reflector oven over here.
You can see I've got the shape.
So if you set it up this way, just like that,
then these fire sticks,
they hold your windscreen in place.
You can see how they just kinda go right there
on the outside.
I'm really excited to try that.
You gotta love those red pine needles.
Let's start with our onion.
I'm just gonna do a traditional cook up with this trout
with onions and potatoes.
Let's get a little beef tallow.
This beef tallow has been wonderful to cook with.
Really nice.
That should be enough onion.
I'm just gonna set that there.
Some of these chunkier pieces on there.
Just a little last.
Get some potato cut up in there.
Pretty thin, so it'll cook fast.
Try to get these potatoes right down
on the bottom of the pan,
so they'll brown up a little bit.
Let's add some salt and pepper.
And I'm gonna go ahead and put my trout in.
Isn't that beautiful?
Let's go ahead and cover it up.
Let's take a peek at it.
See how things are coming along.
Ooh, that's looking good.
Let's see, I might wanna just,
I'll set my fish aside and turn my spuds a little bit.
Make sure they're not getting too dark.
Try to get all the darkest stuff up on top
as much as we can.
Ooh, that's looking good.
Just gonna turn it over.
All right, it's just simmering really nicely now.
Ricky kinda has an upside down mustache.
It's supposed to be below his nose,
but instead it's on top.
But it kinda looks like a mustache on top of his nose.
All right, let's see if we can pull those bones out.
Oh yeah, this is nice and juicy.
Lift that skeleton right up and out of there.
This one's a pretty big fish.
Took a little while to cook it all the way through.
And let's go ahead and cover it back up.
Just let it simmer for a little bit longer.
I'll flip out some of these seeds here.
My fork, make sure there aren't any more in there.
Our trout right on the meat.
Just about that much.
I'm gonna open up my end of my,
this is Hakata spice.
Just put some of that on my fish.
See if we can transfer some of this over here.
And we are ready to eat.
Look at that.
Potatoes are browned up.
Let's try it.
Get a piece of trout
with some potato.
Oh yeah, oh man.
The Hakata really finishes it off.
And the onion, that's good.
I have some pieces of steak for you.
Hey, that's good.
Hey Bill, you just chilling over there?
Taking it easy?
You did really good today, buddy.
It was a lot more work than I expected it to be.
He's a good goat.
Let's set this up for baking.
I've got these hangover sticks.
Those go just like that.
That'll be to hold the air bake pan.
And what I thought I might try
is rather than put the coals all the way on the bottom,
I thought I might try this burner bracket.
Because if I put that in,
and then I put a coal tray,
the only problem with that
is that it is causing this to go too far back.
So if I move this whole thing this direction,
then we can make it fit.
Kind of pile them up, last better.
Put our air bake pan on.
Four panels, that'll go on first.
And the way you remember how these go
is you want that hinge,
the hinge curl in the back,
on the, you want it to be on the outside.
Sorry about that little bump in the flow there.
The battery died on my camera.
Cinnamon rolls, get those going.
I think my cinnamon rolls are finally done.
I didn't have enough hot coals,
so I ended up hooking up my gas.
So I was just desperate to finish them
and I didn't want to start a whole new fire.
So let's see.
Seemed like the sugar was kind of sticking a little bit.
Oh no, they're good.
Yeah, they're done.
Oh yeah, a little bit dark,
but they're not burnt, thank goodness.
So I'm gonna eat them nice and warm.
Some lovely cream cheese frosting.
Ooh, nice and hot.
That's good stuff.
I'm just sleeping out, of course, as always.
I guess I should check the weather.
Double check the weather.
I looked at it before I left
and it looked like it was gonna be okay, but.
All right, folks.
Good night.
We'll see you in the morning.
That's good.
Good morning.
It is, my phone is dead.
I can't tell you what time it is, but it's light.
It's a lot later than I usually wake up,
so I slept in.
And the goats are all doing fine.
I did get sprinkled on just a little bit a couple of times.
One time I got up and I got my tarp out
and I was gonna start moving things around
and then they quit.
So I laid back down and that happened again.
Maggie, come on.
I think Maggie wants her breakfast.
Oh, Maggie.
Good boy, Hector.
Ricky likes affection more than Hector.
Come here, Ricky.
Ricky's kind of a little baby.
He was really little when we got him.
He thinks I have a treat for him or something.
No treats, just love.
Did you sleep?
Goats don't seem to sleep much.
I mean, they do sleep, but not much.
Not like a dog.
Dog sleeps a lot.
The sky is very overcast.
I would be a little more worried about it,
but the forecast said that it would get cloudy in the night.
It didn't show for any showers at all
and it really didn't rain.
I mean, it sprinkled ever so lightly,
but it looks almost like it's gonna rain.
But the forecast said that it would clear up
and then there was a 30% chance of rain this afternoon.
I'm gonna go ahead and put my bedding away
and kind of clean up my bed area just in case it rains.
I won't have quite as much to deal with.
Look at that, blue skies.
The weather report was right.
I don't know how they do it.
Pretty amazing, but it's not gonna rain.
Hallelujah.
These little fuzzy branches off of this pine tree,
just these little ends make for really good fire starter.
And when it burns, it smells really good.
It's just like a really nice floral pine smell.
So it's been very handy.
This is right here by camp,
so it's been nice.
I'll show you.
This stuff doesn't light up quite as fast
as the red pine needles.
You have to hold a flame to it a little bit longer,
but it does pretty darn good.
There we go.
I've got a little piece of steak for Maggie this morning.
Stay, sit.
Hey, sit.
Good girl, stay.
Okay, I'm just gonna let this fire die down a little bit
before I start cooking.
Get a nice bed of hot coals going.
Can you smell it?
You like that, huh?
Let's go see if Bill likes it.
Bill doesn't like it.
Coffee time.
Quite a bit of cream.
I'm gonna add some salt.
Nice big pinch of salt.
We'll put our lid on.
And then if I squeeze the lid real good, shake it.
That's some nice steak cut bacon.
Getting a little bit too hot.
I'm gonna have to let my fire cool down a bit.
I'll tell you what, these fork and spoon tongs, so handy.
Now I broke that egg.
These eggs will not be pretty.
I'm just gonna hit them with the salt and pepper.
Let me get a little more salt and get my fork back,
and I'm gonna eat my breakfast.
Sit down.
This Judy?
No, this Maggie.
Maggie.
Well, that was a delicious breakfast.
I had some friends come up and they're fishing.
There's one lake that I didn't make it to yesterday
that's gonna be a little harder to get to,
but the traveling around up here,
I don't know if you can see these boulders behind me,
but everything up here is a boulder field like that.
And so with the goats and with Maggie,
it's a little bit difficult to get around.
And even a little bit dangerous,
I just don't want one of the goats to get injured
or Maggie to get injured.
I even twisted my ankle pretty bad yesterday.
So I decided to not go up there with them
because the goats would have to follow me
and I just think it's a little bit too risky
as far as taking care of my animals.
I'm gonna pack everything up and get everything ready
to head down off the mountain.
And they are gonna help me carry some of this gear
so that I don't have to have packs on the animals.
I think it'll be safer for them.
I'm gonna be hanging out here at camp for a few minutes
while they go fish for a few hours.
And so I might tinker around with some baking.
I am gonna do a lemon pineapple upside down cake.
Two eggs.
Then I have a packet of cream here.
This is probably a third of a cup or so.
This will take care of both kind of my liquid and my fat.
That's why I love cream.
It's a twofer.
This is just a lemon muffin mix.
Get the air out.
Mix it up.
I'm flowering the pan,
but I'm trying to just do the sides
because the pineapple will be on the bottom.
So there we have our pan.
So I'm gonna put all my pineapple down there in the bottom.
These pieces are rotated.
Just cover the whole bottom.
And this stuff does rise quite a bit.
I'm going to use one of these side burner brackets down low
with coal tray on it.
Load it up with hot coals.
Then we'll use another side burner bracket
with the air bake pan.
And then our cake will sit right there.
This is the titanium stove.
It's quite lightweight.
And it's wanting to pick the whole thing up.
So we'll put our cake right there,
followed by my six panels.
I've got the little oven lid keeper bracket there
that I just need to get on that side
of the windscreen panels.
And we'll let it cook.
I had one extra egg.
No sense in packing it home.
I'm gonna give all the goats a little bit of salt.
Want some salt, buddy?
See if he likes it.
It's just salt.
You don't want it.
All right.
Want some salt?
Pretty strong, huh?
This is hand sanitizer.
I like to just kind of put it on a paper towel.
Wash your hands without water.
Let's see how we're doing.
Should be done, for heaven's sakes.
It only takes a little longer than I think it's going to.
Still looks pretty soft on top, though.
Yeah, it's just right on the surface.
But I'm afraid I'm gonna have to give it another 10 minutes.
Let's go another 10.
It's a big cake.
Okay, I think my cake is finally done.
Go ahead and take this plate off.
I set up a little stand over here.
Let's just look at the top of it here,
but I feel pretty confident.
Yeah.
Yep, we're done.
Looks good.
I'm gonna bring it over here.
I used my bigger windscreen to make a little table here.
Feels like it's coming out.
All right.
Doesn't feel like it's all sliding out, but mostly.
Using your box pot to bake with,
there's definitely a chance
that you're gonna melt your handles a little bit.
Ooh, look at that.
Oh, it's beautiful.
And let's just put these blueberries on there,
just like that.
Holy smokes, look at that.
And there's still quite a bit of juice
in this half of the lemon.
So let's just do a little bit of lemon juice
just to brighten it up.
Nice big chunk of pineapple,
and this is fresh pineapple.
Not canned.
Ooh, ooh, ooh.
Mm, mm, mm, mm.
Oh, man.
That is definitely the best yet.
It doesn't get better than this.
So my friends who are fishing up at that higher lake,
they're gonna be back in about an hour.
I'm gonna try to save them some of this,
because it would blow their minds
to see what you can make out in the wilderness.
Wow, that's so good.
What's cool about the pineapple
is it keeps the bottom from getting burned.
You have all that moisture down there,
but that's also why it took so long to cook.
Mm, mm, mm.
I was just breaking down my Freestyle Octagon
and thought I should show you kind of the results.
That was a pretty extensive fire,
and everything was brand new when I started.
But you can see, if I open this up,
there is a bulge to it.
It still folds.
And I think functionally, it's still fine.
And that's just kind of how it goes with titanium.
You're always folding into this bend.
There's this little space relief bend right there.
And so I'm gonna fold that corner into that bend.
And that just helps you know kind of where to go.
And then when you're finished,
if you open this up and just reverse it like that,
it's a little thinner.
Now, you don't have to do that to make it fit.
It will still fit, but it fits a little more easily
if you do that.
So I'm just gonna throw in these short fire sticks.
Go ahead and put these long fire sticks in.
Kitty corner.
And then the fire grate goes on top.
And that's it.
It all packs down into that nice fire pan tin.
That's a tired goat right there.
We had a big day yesterday.
Bill's over there just hanging out, doing his thing.
Maggie's busy as ever.
But I've got everything packed up,
and I've got all the bulk in my pack.
I just really had to push and shove to get it all to fit.
And then I've got all the packs rolled up,
and I'm gonna put them on top of Bill's saddle
so Bill won't have packs on the sides.
None of the goats will have packs on them
because going up and over all of these boulders
for the goats is already difficult.
I mean, they do well on it, they're goats.
They have great traction on those rocks.
But when they have packs on
and they maybe jump up to a higher level,
and then their packs bump the rock,
it can throw their balance off.
Bill will still have his saddle on,
but all of the load will be right on top of his back,
nothing on the sides.
The trip home is gonna be quite arduous.
I'm not gonna film it.
I don't wanna have to hold my camera the whole way down.
Wow.
All right, I'm bribing these guys
with some of my cake so they carry some of my gear back.
Check that out, huh?
Blueberry, lemon, see, I see you got the nice lemon zest.
Ooh, Maggie got some Incidental.
Yeah, she's good at that.
So good, man.
The pineapple, gotta get some pineapple in there.
Got a nice big chunk.
Impressive.
That's pretty nice, huh?
Cream cheese frosting?
Yeah.
My daughter, Emma, made it for me.
Five-star dining right here.
Heck yeah.
I think that's about my best cake yet.
Wow.
The combo of flavors is just fantastic, huh?
Nice, moist cake.
Yeah, there's some pineapple in there too, chunks.
Okay, we are all packed up,
and we are gonna make the journey down this mountain,
and I'm gonna pack up my camera.
Ramp up his anchorage.
I figure some of you might have been worrying
whether or not we made it back to the truck.
Well, we did.
We're here.
It was a rough hike, but we're back,
and everyone's safe and sound,
so we're all good, and we'll do it again someday soon.
Thanks for watching.
Bye.
