Hi.
Absolutely love this as the Padres got another starter,
something they desperately needed
with Casey Mize.
Who is Casey Mize?
Is he good?
Should we be excited?
Let's talk about it.
Hi, welcome back to another episode
of Padres Digest with your host, Andrew.
Trade deadline was today.
It's now over.
We got two players.
You saw Robbie Ray.
Now we have Casey Mize.
Now you're probably wondering, who is Casey Mize?
Is he any good?
Should we be excited?
Yes.
Yes, you should.
Let's talk about it. Before we get too deep into the video,
first of all, hi everyone on stream.
I've been streaming all day. I am tired.
But thank you guys so much for being on stream with me today.
It's been super fun, so thank you for that.
But also, please subscribe, follow us on X,
Instagram, Facebook, Padres Digest.
And yeah, I guess let's just jump into it.
If you didn't see, here is the tweet that I definitely did
not bring up like I was supposed to.
Mm-hmm.
There we go.
Padres get Casey Mize
and Gage Workman from the Tigers for Cash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf.
Also say hi, chat.
You are on video.
So, who is Casey Mize?
He's pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.
I made a graphic for him a couple of days ago
in preparation for maybe getting him.
So...
Lucky me, I already have it made, but
so far this year, he has a 270 ERA.
Yes, 270. He has a
below one whip. Yes, below one
whip. The problem is, is that he
is a rental, but
you know, he's still very, very good.
Right? So pitching run value,
he's at 90th percentile, which is some of the best
in the league. Expected ERA is
at 3.07, which is
still around 2.07, so still very good.
Very good command. Does not walk
very many people. Strikeouts are
still pretty good.
Fly ball heavy guy.
So a lot of fly balls, but that's fine
because we play in Petco Park.
People don't want to hit him very hard.
Career percentage, hard hit percentage.
I think he's very, very good.
I'm just, I don't like the fact that he's a rental,
but we can still re-sign him.
There's nothing saying that we won't re-sign him.
It says Detroit will attract a real prospect price.
I'll show you that in a second.
But his four-seam 104, slider 103.
Slurve 102, so his stuff is very good.
The whiffs on it are also very good.
Expected weighted on-base average is also pretty, pretty good.
So he does not get hit very hard.
He has very good stuff, good whiff.
He has a below 3 ERA and a below 1 whiff.
So yes, he is very good.
I could see him slotting at number 1.
On the rotation, I have a little graphic for you.
I think for right now, though, it'll
be Michael King number one, not because he should, but
because that's the way the rotation is going to turn out.
So today he or tomorrow he might face Rodriguez
because he hasn't pitched in August yet, which
means it's been a couple of days.
I don't know what exactly when his rest cycle is,
but I could see us getting Mize for day
two, Robbie Ray for day three, and then Walker Bueller.
And the last spot is up for debate.
Uh, it'll obviously either be Pavetta or Musgrove.
Whoever comes back first, probably Pavetta.
So Pavetta for Vasquez, and then Bueller's number five,
then Musgrove comes back, and then you got
one, two, three, four, five. Can you see my mouse?
Yeah, you can. So if one, two, three, four, five
comes back and pitches really well,
I don't want to say this is a Dodger rotation good, but if
everyone performs at their peak,
like Joe Musgrove was one of the best pitchers for us in 2022.
Nick Pavetta was one of the best pitchers for us last year.
Michael King was one of the best pitchers for us in
24. Casey Mize is one of the best
pitchers right now. Robbie Ray has been
solid. Like, this could be
one of the most dangerous rotations in the entire
league. We went from having to use
him, him, him,
him, and kind of him,
to having him, him,
with him and him coming
back. Like, if that doesn't excite you,
you need to go outside, touch grass, and
You know what I mean?
It's the best way I can say it.
But yeah, look at these stats.
Don't look at these and be like,
ugh, he doesn't look that good.
Shut up. He looks great.
He looks really, really good.
I can show you the splits.
It's a little cut off,
my bad, but so far in July
his ERA is at
2.91. It was 3.63.
Not great in June, but 1.08
in May.
Uh, and August, when he pitches,
we'll see what it does, but he is pretty, pretty good.
Another thing I want to look at real quick that I haven't yet.
Okay.
This is good.
Well, what's kind of, so first inning, great.
Second inning, great.
Third inning, great.
But he can go to the fifth inning.
He can go to the sixth inning.
He's gone to the seventh inning and the fifth and sixth inning.
His ERA is actually really good.
Fourth inning, third inning.
Those are a big problem, right?
But he can actually go deep in games
and he will save the bullpen a bit, which is fantastic.
So I like that we got a pitcher who's really good
and can go deep in the games.
And we didn't lose Miller.
We didn't lose Morajon.
We didn't lose Wandi.
We didn't lose anybody.
We kept Ty France.
Oh, excuse me.
I just ate.
Sorry.
So I'm not going to say this is the best.
Greatest trade deadline we could have had.
But I think for the fact that we're 30th in prospects,
Uh...
all we got rid of was Cash Mayfield.
He's gone.
Gone.
Miguel Mendes, gone.
Hold on.
Hernandez, gone.
And is Jackson Wolf on here?
Maybe not, he's gone.
But we also got Gage Workman from the Tigers. His stats are good
hitting wise, like he makes really good contact,
but he strikes out a lot, doesn't walk very often,
and so far in the MLB he hasn't been great,
but he has plenty of control. He has,
he's pre-arbitration right now,
but he's 26 years old, so it's not like he's young.
I'm young.
He has the same birthday as my brother.
Just learned that.
But yeah, I mean, I don't hate it.
I mean, we'll see what he has.
If it's nothing, cool.
If he has something, fantastic.
You know what I mean?
But this, hold on.
This I love.
This I absolutely love.
This could be huge for us.
This right here could take us into,
genuinely could take us into the playoffs.
I don't know how deep in the playoffs,
but I think this could take us to the playoffs.
I never thought I would see this man
in a Padres uniform.
But here we are, right?
And this is honestly someone I would love to re-sign.
He's 30 years old.
So it's not like he's old.
Well, he's 29.
He'll be 30 next year.
So it's not like he's old.
You know what I mean?
So this is the kind of move that I like.
Nothing super crazy.
Nothing that cost us too much.
Like Cash Mayfield's good, right?
He's 21 in high A.
I think keeping Cruz Schoolcraft, who's 19, was a better idea.
We kept Salas, which was the biggest thing.
And, like, we kept other solid players,
like Ryan Weidman, Tucker Musgrove,
Jaeger, Tears, Quintana, McCoy.
Like, there's really good prospects that people don't really, you know,
they don't really know, they're sleeping on, and that's fine.
I think this was a solid move for AJ Preller,
and I'm actually super excited for it.
But you guys, of course, in the comments and in chat,
Let me know how you feel.
Do you think this is a good move
to give up two prospects?
Well, I don't know if I call Jackson Wolfe a prospect,
but giving up two, whatever, prospects
for Casey Mize and giving up prospects for Robbie Ray.
Do you think these two rental pitchers
will make that much of an impact for our team?
Or do you think it was too much of a risk
and you don't want the Padres to screw themselves
for the next 80 years?
