And more than half a million visitors
and a quarter million motorcycles are
roaring onto Galveston Island this weekend
for the annual Lone Star Rally.
Law enforcement is ramping up patrols, though,
across I-45 and major routes to try and keep the
peace. Our Fox 26 photojournalist Chandler Watson took
a look at the massive crowds
and traffic changes that you need to know before you go.
The Lone Star Rally in Galveston often
attracts upwards of 500,000 people.
More traffic could cause for more trouble.
So we got to talk to people about how to stay safe.
Go to the Lone Star Rally,
I love it.
Lone Star Rally, from my understanding,
is probably one of the biggest motorcycle events
in the country, and we're honored to have it here
in Galveston County, especially on
the island, where it's been since it started.
I've been three years in a row,
and I've had a kind of easier situation.
I mean, obviously, there's a lot of motorcycles
and a lot of people, and you can't control
everybody, but honestly, last year, we're almost like...
Half a million motorcycles and it wasn't that bad.
We want people to come down here and have a great time in Galveston.
But we want them to get here safely
and we wanna make sure they're paying attention to
the motorcycles on the road. And we wanna make sure
that the motorcyclists are paying attention
to the cars that are surrounding them,
so we don't have any more fatality accidents.
Please be safe with the motorcycles.
Houston is wild for motorcycles, pretty wild.
And you have to be all the time alert.
Like 24-7, every time you ride your motorcycle,
you have to be alert.
As everybody knows, every year you have a bunch
of fatality accidents that happen as a result of Lone Star Rally.
This year we kind of took a different approach
from the Galveston County Sheriff's standpoint.
We decided to go ahead and do a DWI task force slash
traffic enforcement program up here on the mainland
to try to stop all that before it even got to the island.
Please be alert.
And safety, helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, so important. So important.
Sheriff Jimmy Fullen with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office
tells me there have been close to a hundred arrests since Thursday
in connection with the Lone Star Rally.
But as both gentlemen iterated in the story, have fun, just be safe.
This is Chandler Watson reporting in Houston. Back to you.
