Let's bring in Rula Amin to tell us more now.
She's the Senior Communication Advisor for the UN Refugee Agency.
Great to have you with us on the program today, Rula.
Thank you so much for joining us.
Let's begin with Taiz because it's considered
the epicenter of Yemen's humanitarian crisis right now.
The city is still under a military siege.
So is aid getting in at all?
And what's the situation like for residents there at the moment?
Yes, as you said, Taiz government,
not just Taiz the city, has been the epicenter of the
displacement crisis, because most of the people
who have been forced to flee their homes looking
for safety have fled in that government.
And when they fled, they have stayed in the government.
Unfortunately, and as the fighting intensifies,
many of the roads have been damaged.
Some are blocked and the infrastructure have also been damaged,
so many people are finding
it extremely difficult to flee further away from the fighting.
Not to mention that the fighting has
also led to an increase in fuel prices,
which means that transportation and finding transportation
has become also more challenging.
So overall, since this latest escalation started,
More than 313,000 people have been internally displaced in Yemen.
And to see the impact and the context of that,
we have to remember that before this latest escalation,
Thank you.
we had in Yemen more than 5.2 million people
who were internally displaced inside the country.
So people were already suffering. People had already been displaced.
Displacement sites and camps are overcrowded.
People who are running away now are finding a hard time
finding shelter, access to clean water, health services, food.
And there's a huge need for support to reach all these people
who have been displaced.
But also the fact that the fighting has
been expanding across multiple fronts.
That means more obstacles in front of humanitarian workers,
such as my colleagues from UNHCR who are on the ground in Yemen.
But having a huge...
It's facing very huge challenges reaching some of the affected areas.
The roads, as I said, some of the roads are blocked.
Some of the roads have been damaged.
Major insecurity.
And that's why we're calling on all the fighting parties to make sure
that humanitarian workers have unimpeded access and safe access so that
they can reach all these people who are desperately in need of support.
Rula, you...
