AI GeneratedPoland is reeling from an unprecedented terrorist attack in Krakow's historic square, where a 24-year-old gunman killed six people and wounded 16 others. The tragedy deepened with the discovery of three more bodies, likely family members, at the suspect's home. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has labeled the event an act of terrorism, marking a shocking escalation of violence in the country.
Welcome to the show. We're going to start
with a chilling new discovery in Poland where three
bodies have reportedly been found inside
the Krakow gunman's home. That's in addition to
six people killed and 16 wounded
when the attacker opened fire in the city's historic square.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk has now declared
the shooting an act of terrorism, saying that Poland
has never experienced anything quite like it.
The 25-year-old suspect has been described by
authorities as holding radical far-right views.
He was shot by the police. Here is Prime Minister
We have confirmation,
two women and a man are dead inside the perpetrator's home.
It is indeed an extraordinary tragedy.
There are strong indications that they were immediate family members.
Thank you, Shiroji.
Joining us now for the latest update is Kazimierz Lysiak,
chief correspondent for TV Poland.
Thank you so much for joining us, Kazimierz.
What is the latest that we understand about these new bodies
which have been found there at the gunman's home?
Oh yes, I am Chief Correspondent Poland for TVP World,
that's the English language channel
of the Polish public broadcaster.
Now, indeed, three bodies were found at the home at Ostrobit
Świętokrzyski, that's a town some two-hour drive north from Krakow.
So, um,
Prime Minister Tusk at a special emergency meeting said
that these most likely were family members of the attacker.
And really, we don't know much more.
The interior minister also said that he had radical views
and was fascinated by the far right.
But there is an important thing to mention here.
He also said that this needs to be verified.
That's actually a theme that I think we
are seeing here in Poland as well.
All these government officials are saying we
are still verifying all of this information.
So take it with a grain of salt.
Take it with a grain of salt.
But do we know anything more about his motives?
Do we know anything more about the profile
of the attacker at this point?
Like I said, not really much more, the interior minister said radical
views and fascinated by the far right, that's about as much as we know,
we know that he was Polish, he was 24 year old, he
was wearing something reminding a uniform in this footage we can see,
you know, from social media, however, it is specified, it was specified
by the national, by the defense minister that he was not a soldier,
he was not part of the Polish army, that has to be said.
Now, two policemen were also wounded,
and I believe the gunman is still in hospital at this point in time.
And we saw the scenes.
If you can just describe to our viewers just how
this all unfolded on the streets.
It started off, you could hear the gunshots
in videos that are being widely circulated.
It's difficult to clarify exactly what was going on,
but it certainly appeared calm at some point before the panic set in.
How did it actually unfold?
Yeah, and that calm that you've just mentioned,
it's something that we've heard police officers
describe as well at length,
that this is something that people are just not used to
here in Poland, hearing these shots,
because something like this has never happened here
before. We were all in shock.
I'm still here in Warsaw, but I'm going there to Krakow tomorrow,
first thing in the morning, because this is really unprecedented.
We haven't seen such an attack ever.
In Poland, so initially people, when they heard the shots,
they weren't really running away until
they saw some people who were really close to the attacker
who started running away. And these are
really horrifying scenes on social media.
And be careful because there is a lot of fake videos,
fake pictures all over the internet. So be careful what you believe and
only trust really official information
from the government. But what we have seen
There's people running away shouting,
you know, this is the place especially it's
so shocking to everyone here in Poland because the Krakow Old Square,
it's something which every Pole knows very well.
We've all been there. I've been there many times.
This is the place where not only tourists from all over the world go,
but also Poles from the entire country,
one of the most popular tourist places in all of Poland.
A really such an attack is a shock to everyone here.
We've just been following the news all day and, you know,
we've been really struck with the tragedy that it is.
I myself hold a very personal interest
in that square as well, Kazimierz.
It's certainly a place that I know very well.
It's a place I've eaten at.
It's absolutely, it touches at the heartstrings.
But just tell me how Poland is reacting,
how the people are talking amongst each other.
What is the government saying
and what are people saying on a human level now going forward?
Yeah, I mean, on a human level, first of all,
it's a great tragedy, so everyone is in mourning.
And the president of Krakow, recently elected, has
also announced the time of mourning for the city until November 11th.
That's the National Day of Independence in Poland.
We're just on the eve of it,
so he announced this mourning in Krakow until then.
And also the president of Poland,
Karol Nawrocki, has also announced a national...
mourning between the days of 8th and 9th of November
and what we've seen I've just been on a call with my family
and you know we've been discussing all of it because it really
is a shock we have family members in Krakow everyone is really just
terrified by this by the scale by the by the seeming lack of lack
of motive by just the fact that the man just went there with his car
and started shooting seemingly at random.
It just passes by and this is something shocking.
And what I can tell you already,
I'm going to be there in Krakow tomorrow,
but I can expect Poles are going to come out in droves to,
well, maybe not the old square itself because it's going to be blocked
by the police, but in the surrounding area.
And we will be seeing for sure candles being lit there
and people getting together to be together in this difficult time
because that's just what Poles do.
Absolutely. It really will.
Well, just to...
Evoke vigils, as you say,
and all the people commemorating now nine deaths confirmed
as a result of events surrounding what we've seen in Krakow today.
Thank you so much, Kazimierz Lisiak from TVP World.
